It is very hard to determine. Back in 85, my astronomy teacher mention that Betelgeuse was fluctuating which hint that it may or did explode; but it did not exploded in 1485. It may have exploded later than that year since that is the light we see now.

Hi. Sirius B, a white dwarf orbiting Sirius. As Sirius ages it should become a "red giant". Then the dwarf will accumulate material on it's surface until it goes supernova.
