Light is a weird phenomenon.

The current understanding is light is a a transmission of energy in packets called photons. Here's the bizarre part, ligtht can act like a particle that you can shoot when it wants to AND it can act like a wave like a sound wave or a ripple in a pond.

Beyond that, it gets too complicated for me. If you want to think of it basically, think of light as energy in a visible form.

The wavelengths of visible light range from about 350 or 400 nm to about 750 or 800 nm. The term “light” is often extended to adjacent wavelength ranges that the eye cannot detect—to infrared radiation, which has a frequency less than that of visible light, and to ultraviolet radiation and black light, which have a frequency greater than that of visible light.
If white light, which contains all visible wavelengths, is separated, or dispersed, into a spectrum, each wavelength is seen to correspond to a different color. Light that is all of the same wavelength and phase (all the waves are in step with one another) is called “coherent”; one of the most important modern applications of light has been the development of a source of coherent light—the laser.

Light is very strange, very interesting.

White light is a mix of all colors, and black is the absence of all color. White light can also be turned into the 6 colored rainbow when shown through a prism, hence the cover of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" ( http://www.pink-floyd-lyrics.net/pink-floyd-lyrics/TheDarkSideOfTheMoon.jpg ).

Other colors such as red through purple are bounced off of objects. For example, a green leaf adsorbs all colors except green, and the green rays (the mix of blue and yellow) bounce off, resulting in that particular visible spectrum appearing there. Also related to that, black clothing absorbs all light which means it can get very overheated at times which is why they say not to wear black/dark clothing in the summer.

As for the phenomena of the blending of colors to get green, purple, brown, orange and white it's rather confusing, the combined wavelenghts and frequence of the 2 rays of light probably combine in such a way that they make a new color, and besides that a world with just red, yellow, blue and black would be a pretty boring and confusing one.

Then of course the colors absorbed and reflected depend on the pigment that the object produces or just the chemistry. For example, us humans take in iron, copper, potassium and other elements everyday as a part of our diet but we don't shine like the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz; our pigments (based on hereditary history) determine what color we turn out to be.

In the end it's all rather confusing, it's a rather complex subject as basic as it seems.

Yes, light is made of photons. What THOSE are, however, nobody exactly knows.

Light remains a mystery. Einstein once said "I'd like to spend the rest of my reflecting on what life is." So you're in good company.

Light is Energy in the form of an Electromagnetic field.

This is the least complicated answer. Other above have given more detail to be technically correct.

Light is made up of photons. On the electromagnetic spectrum you have different kind of light. Your infared light ( light which is visible ) and then you have your gamma rays and x rays which are at much higher ends of the spectrum.

Light - electromagnetic radiation, is an energy variable. It has energy in waveform according to the concept of E = hf. This wave has the capacity to form mass when it enters near the nucleus of an atom. At that time it forms negative and positive electrons (mass). The electron in turn forms other, more complicated masses. The smallest unit of electromagnetic energy appears to be the graviton. This value appears to be h = c(g). Plank's constant is equal to a single graviton.

The graviton is formed according to the equation c2 = E/m. This shows energy and mass to be variables, and the value of c2 to be a constant, whose value increases in quantity. In all of these instances, the energy value appears to be waveform.
