I am just watching a programme called Maternity Ward on Living2 and I was just wondering why do American women lie on their backs during labour?
Isnt it best to move around and have an active labour? I was told that if you lie on your back then its more painful and there is more chance of something going wrong or your labour stopping and that if you move around a lot during labour then it speeds things up and if you give birth in a more upright position or on your hands and knees then it is less painful and easier to give birth as you are not going against gravity.
So my question is, why do american women lie on their backs during labour like the old days instead of having an active labour which has been proven to be better?
Can anyone shed some light please?

I went to my first lamaze class last night. They talked about doing the Kegal exercises and what can happen if you dont do them. Im 31 weeks and have never done them. Are they really that improtant to do? Also, they made labor look really easy. Is it possible for it to be that simple. Is labor really all that bad? Im thinking it will be the worst nightmare, but even the videos made it look so simple. HELP!! What am I to really expect?

I may have to be induced tomorrow but the thought of having to stay in hospital and wait to see if it works is not something I am looking forward too. if it doesnt work at all after 3 days I will have to have a cesarean which i dont want. How long after being induced do women generally get going !

I've already been to the doctor twice.

I had my first prenatal appointment around 8 weeks, and I had an ultrasound, pelvic and breast exam, and a whole bunch of blood work done.

At 12 weeks I went for the NT test, which was another ultrasound and more blood work. The NT test came out good.

Today's my 16 week appointment and I'm wondering what to expect. Thanks!

Ok, I am about 3-4 days late and soooo constipated.I am usually very regular. I have a clean diet, high fiber, lots of water, exercise 4-5 days a week, so all of those areas are covered. Just wondered if it could be "a sign" (lol) Other than that, no symptoms, and no signs of my period coming any time soon, either. So, could constipation be a sign of very early pregnancy?

Ok i have missed my period for 2 months and since i have an irregular period i thought it was just normal. But then i was browsing Y! answers i looked up missed periods and i found out that if u miss for 2 months you can be preggy.
But i also learned that you can miss it due to stress and change of diet.
And i have been havng unprotected sex with my boyfriend (we have no stds) We didnt always have it unprotected sex...we just started doing without a condom since we have been in such a long term relationship.
But then i started to feel that i was preggy so i bought a birth control kit but i didnt read the directons right and learned that the pregancy test is more accurate 1 day b4 your period (which i missed for 2 months) So the birth control test came out negative which could still be postive because the test was un accurate, so long story short to make my bf feel guilty for cheating on me i told him i was pregnant and lied and told him i had the doctor check me out and he said tha

I know it sounds like a funny question, but since i have been pregnant, i find that i am sneezing soo much everyday throughout the day. I have heard that sneezing is your body's way of warding off any kind of germies trying to get into your body, but i really have been sneezing a lot every day, can anyone relate?

I am 33 weeks, and at my doctor's visit today I noticed that I have only gained 0.1 lbs since my last visit (3 wks ago). The doctor didn't seem too concerned, but I realized after I left that if the baby is supposed to gain about 1/2 lb a week at this point, then I would have actually lost weight while she gained it. I know weight gain can slow down towards the end, but is that normal? I am still measuring right on (33 cm at 33 wks). The doctor also told me that I really shouldn't gain much more weight, which was odd because I thought I should still be gaining about a pound a week. I've gained 35.7 lbs, but I started out a little bit underweight. Not gaining any more would be fine with me, but I'm afraid the baby is going to be too small. Is this normal? How much weight did you gain the last 6-7 weeks of pregnancy?

I went to the doctor yesterday and she said that most likely i was having a girl because of the heart rate. Then she said that she was almost positive. Could the doctor acutally be able to tell if its a boy or girl by the rate of the heart?

My second question I had the AFP test done. In a way I dont want to know if there is something wrong with my baby and in a way I do. I'm 22 years old so I dont know if my age is a factor in this. But know im more worried about the results of the test. Is it a good idea to know the answer or should I just forget about it.

I am now 37 weeks and 2 days pregnant. Went to doctor today and he said I am still 1 cm dilated and my cervix is still high. With my third baby, I walked around 3cm for at least 3 months before I gave birth. Could it be because its been 7 years since I have had a baby? My best friend told me to do squats to help bring her down and start labour. Is she right?

Who wants to show off their goods at work? I mean, does anyone else agree with me?

ALL of my maternity tops are cut so low you can see my bra in the front and plenty of cleavage. It was fine when it was winter because I just wore a camisole underneath, but now the weather's getting warmer and I don't want to dress in layers.

Hi there,
I'm a week shy of being 7 months and i had wanted to repaint a room for the baby. It's not very big, but i know there are problems with fumes from the paint and such. i'm just wondering if it's okay for me to paint if i wear a mask and have the windows open. I wanted to be able to help my husband but wasn't sure if it was safe. Thanks.
