They are safe, but some people are allergic to them or can have irritation from them. Test it out and see. If it bothers either of you...stop using them.

Spermicides won't harm you, barring an allergic reaction, but used alone they are not very effective, so you won't be safe from pregnancy. Alone they are only 50-80% effective. well i dont know if they are safe but they are not very effective my friend just got pregnant with a spermicidal comdom. In fact spremicide is less effective than regular condoms & etc.
