Hi, You can get more information on Natural Family Planning at www.ccli.org (Couple to Couple League) They can put you in touch with a teacher in your area, or give you info on their Home Study Course. For those who say you must have extremely regular cycles, they're probably thinking the old rhythm method, which didn't work with irregular cycles or when a woman was breastfeeding. Today's NFP can be 99% effective at avoiding pregnancy. It requires taking your temperature every morning and watching for other signs when you use the bathroom. My husband and I have used it for over ten years and never had an unplanned pregnancy. It's helped us to conceive our children quickly and easily when we were ready for them. Good luck to you.

In Natural Family Planning a couple refrains from intercourse during a woman's fertile period of about 100-120 hours each month. This is done by tracking the woman's monthly cycles to determine the pattern of fertility for that individual woman. Likewise, if a couple is trying to concieve they already have a very good idea of when the best time for intercourse might be. If a woman has regular monthly cycles the method can be highly effective, if however a woman's cycles are irregular this method is not recommended for prevention of pregnancy.
You may find the site below of interest. I also recommend contacting a local Catholic church. They may be able to assist you in further information!

It's basically not having sex at certain times of the month you are most likely to be ovulating. However, in real life, not all women ovulate at the same time in their cycle, and every cycle in each woman can vary...so it's a really uncertain method of birth control, plus there is nearly a week out of the month that you can't have sex at all (which starts about 14 days after the first day of your period). You figure out these periods by either checking your cervical mucus or your temperature, since both change around the time of ovulation. I wouldn't recommend it if you are young and absoultely cannot have a child right now (considering up to 30 out of 100 couples using this method become pregnant within a year), but for partners in a stable, lifelong relationship who aren't trying to have a baby but would not be devastated if it happened...it could be a good solution.

NFP can be difficult and requires cooperation and patience from your husband, but it's a great way to get in touch with your body. I am Catholic and this is what I've always used. I've had one unplanned pregnancy in 17 years and it's because I wasn't paying attention, not because the method failed. I think it's a much healthier approach to family planning than to bombard your body with all kinds of hormones and drugs. Just do a key word search for Natural Family Planning. Print one of those charts and try just tracking your symptoms; see how it goes. Good luck.

It does require a lot of discipline. Its not something for anyone who's gonna go half-a** at it. Those that have negative things to say just don't understand it. Many many women use it and don't have an unplanned pregnancy, and if they do, when questioned further, they'll admit to slacking in their charting. Best of luck to you.
