My dr. said that the heartrate is NOT a way of telling the sex at all!
I don't want to know for two reasons:
1 - there is nothing that can be done if something is wrong
2 - they are only about 80% accurate, so you could get a false positive and be worried for nothing.
Hope this helps!

That is a load of bologna. You cannot tell what baby you are having by the heart rate. It is possible that the doctor could see that it was possibly a girl since the sex organs should be there by now, but it is still early and very easy to make a mistake since a clitoris can look like a penis at this early stage. You doctor can tell you will certainty at about 18-20 weeks what you are having by ultrasound. You cannot tell the sex of a baby by its heart rate, that's silly and if it was my doctor that told me that, I would probably start looking for another doctor.
About the AFP test, it is a routine test that will tell you if there is a possibility that something is wrong. If the test comes back positive, it does not mean something is wrong for sure, it just means that they need to do an amniocentesis to further investigate. They do the test at this early stage to give mothers the opportunity to decide what they want to do if it comes back positive or if there is any treatment options that can be done. You are young and the chances of having any problems are small, unless there is anything in your family history that could cause a problem. The chances of having a down-syndrome child increases with age. Some doctors will not call with the results if everything comes back normal, so if you want to know the results be sure to ask the doctor on your next vist.

I heard about that, but I can tell you from experience that it is not true. I have 3 girls and none of their heart rates were even close to being the same. 1 had a calm, moderate rate, 1 had a kinda speedy heart rate, and the 3rd sounded like a race horse running on a track. With the 1st two, doc was right on the money, but the last one was the complete opposite. As for the test, yes you should find out the results. They do those tests to make sure that if there is something that can be fixed, prior to birth or immediately following, they can be prepared. All you can do is pray for your baby to be healthy. And don't worry so much about what can go wrong, think of all the things that WILL go right.

Girls typically have a faster heartbeat, but this is not a way to determine sex. This is just a generalization. Some boys will have a faster heartrate and some girls will have a slower one. They say girls typically run at around, I think, 160, but some boys do this. My little girls heartrate is typically around 145, which they say is more typical for a boy.
Just wait until your ultrasound, which should be in the next few weeks for a better idea.
Oops forgot the second part of your question. If you have already had the test done, then you might as well find out. However, my friend had this done and she was at an elevated risk, but everything turned out fine. She actually was quite upset over what turned out to be nothing, which can happen a lot. So it is really up to you. I personally, never had the test, because my doc said it wasn't necessary for me.

My baby's heartbeat was high...and it's a girl. It's not a sure fire way to determine gender...but some people really believe that a higher heart rate means girl.
As far as the test goes...I got it done too and wanted to know the result for the simple fact of getting some warning. It wasn't going to decide anything for me...it was just a way of getting a heads up to prepare...in that way it can be a good thing to find out the results. For me, my husband is a PhD student...so we wanted to know in case he needed to quit school and get a full time job so that we would have more money if our child needed it...etc.
I'm 22 also...I wouldn't worry too much! You're baby is most likely healthy as can be! :)

Heart rate is not really an indicator of gender - I'd take the guess with a grain of salt and not bet on it 100%.
At 22, your chances of having a baby with Down's or some other chromosomal issue is very low unless you have a family history - it only starts to become an issue after 35. Still, the results are good to know because it enables you to prepare yourself in the event that you are having a child with issues (rather than deal with the shock and have to make special plans for care etc at birth) and also gives you the option of continuing the pregnancy or not.

I wouldn't put much stock in the heartbeat to tell the gender. I was told I was having a boy by my doctor and the u/s revealed it was a girl. Believe me, she's a girl! My second's hb went from the "boy" range to the "girl" range on different days. He's a boy. Wait for your u/s if you want to know.
I never had the AFP. There are tons of false positives. Don't worry about the results unless you truly are planning on doing something (like aborting) based on the results.

Its a myth that you can tell the sex of a baby by heartrate. Heck, if we went by that, I'd have two boys right now instead of two girls! The fact of the matter is that its been scientifically disproven. Here is a link to a study about this very topic. Scroll down to see the charts.

As for the test, I personally wouldn't want to see the results for a number of reasons. One being, that they aren't always accurate. The test could show one thing and you could end up stressing the whole time and ultimately have an unaffected child. The choice is yours. Best of luck to you.

That's an old wives tale. If your baby is active then the heart rate is faster.....I asked my Dr. that...she laughed & said try your heart rate now & then try it later...it'll be different.
I had the AFP Test done. I'm 29. It drove me nuts waiting to find out. But once I got the results I felt soooo much better.

i know that feeling. its a hard decision to make. for me it was better that i knew before hand so i could plan. i wanted know to have time to prepare, and not be hit with it. congrats on your baby and good luck. my doctors all told me by the heart rate what i was having and it was correct both times. it isnt always right, but it does work more often than not. no matter what the test shows and what you decide to do about the test you will have a bundle of joy in 5 months. i wouldnt trade being a mommy for nothing. good luck and God bless
