Law & Ethics - December 2007

decare a "national emergency" in January 2009, call for martial law, and not yield his position to an incoming president. Do you think this is within the realm of possibility, and is it even legal? This sounds more than a bit paranoid to me, but what do I know about the myriad back alley dirty dealings in the White House? Your opinion please, and try to keep it fair and balanced!

Last May Gov. Gregoire signed into law a measure that will make Washington roads safer by banning text messaging while driving . This law takes effect Jan. 1, 2008. It includes reading, writing and sending text messages. The fine will be $124. Traffic fines can be higher if the violation occurs in a construction zone.

Gov. Gregoire also signed into law a measure that bans the use of cell phones while driving unless the driver is using a hands-free device. That law will take effect July 1, 2008, and will also carry a $124 fine.

(What are your thoughts)??

Or is it invasion of privacy? My sister-in-law received a flyer w/ the pedophiler's name and address who lives about 1 block from her. Is that legal? I'm glad they handed out flyers but was wondering if that was constitutionally right.

My husband took out a payday loan, when he went to pay on the balance and get another loan the cashier gave him way too much money back. I'm sure some people are familar with this process but I'll explain anyways... He took out a $200 loan, every other week he has to pay $30 interest untill he pays off the loan. When he went to renew it, the cashier gave him a receipt for the first loan saying that it was paid in full without taking his money. Then she renewed the loan giving him an additional $200. Totaling $430 when she only should of given him $200. It's so tempting because here at Christmas we really need the money, but if I could hold off untill after Chistmas to give it back would help us so much. I don't have a clue what to do. Right before this happened my car broke down and we had a water leak that cost around $300. Whats the deal is this a blessing or should we give the money back and be broke? Could he get in trouble because the cashier made a mistake? Please help?

I didnt realize there was a difference between signing the back and signing the front when writing checks. Now i sent it out and its too late to change it. Will they still penalize me for it? Or Will they just send the check back to me and tell me to write another one with no repercussions even if its already past the payment deadline? Its a big ticket and i dont know if they'll send the check back in time before the deadline. What can i do?

and IS there a difference between signing the back and signing the front? I thought it was both the same.

My son's father and I had verbally decided on child support. He has maybe paid me like $40 dollars since May. I wanted to get this enforced and have it on paper through the courts. I don't have money for a lawyer and I was wondering how I petition the courts for it. I live in Virginia. I am desperate.

A credit card scam is foiled when the victim cancels his card, calls the store it was used in, and gets a full description of the offender from them.

The police say that as he will not lose any money, the store will not lose any goods, and the bank will pick up the bill, no crime has been commited.

God bless the incompetent British Bobby.

could the real reason we can't have the Ten Commandments posted in a courthouse is this: You cannot post "Thou Shalt Not Steal," "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery," and "Thou Shall Not Lie" in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians...It creates a hostile work environment.

I am being sued for 3300 dollars for a Gateway computer I brought seven years ago. I was young at the time. I can't remember but I think I was 17 at the time. I have a job but I don't make that much money. I am the sole provider of my household which includes my mother and two younger sisters. I don't have the money to pay, what should I do? Will they send me to jail if I can't pay? Will they garnish my wages or audit my tax return? I am so scared, I can't afford a lawyer. What is the worse they can do? I know I owe the money and I want to pay but I just don't have it and I told the people thats sueing me this. Please help.

My company was acquired by another, much larger company. As part of the process, we have to fill out applications listing our criminal convictions and have our figerprints taken. Here is my question: I have a felony on my record for DUI (2004) and, as a result of all the financial strain casued by DUI, I had to declare bankruptcy in 2006. The new hire paperwork says applicants may not be hired if there is a statutory disqualification under federal or state securites and banking laws found in the backgroud check. Should I be really worried and start looking for another job because of the felony DUI and bankruptcy?

Please only serious answers! Thanks!

I live in New York and it is rumored that the man who just moved next door was fired from his job because he was caught looking and child pornography on the internet. I do not know where he used to work so i have no way of finding out if it's true. If it is true, wouldn't he have been punished in some way in court? Do you know what the typical punishment is for looking at child pornography? Is there a way to find out if he was punished? i've already checked the sex offender registry and he's not on it. Thanks!

It just seems to reason that coverage for a car accident would be covered under universal health, instead of car insurance. Do you think the insurance industry will ever allow the public to kill these cash cows? Thier industry would suffer quite a financial hit in both areas.

Can anyone remember a court case in the States about a year ago, where a small extremely cute dog (a Shitsu?) was ordered to appear as a witness?

I think the police had noticed letters addressed to and this mystery family member was duly commanded to appear in court.

I believe the dog's name was something like "Casey".

Anyone help out on this?
