Last May Gov. Gregoire signed into law a measure that will make Washington roads safer by banning text messaging while driving . This law takes effect Jan. 1, 2008. It includes reading, writing and sending text messages. The fine will be $124. Traffic fines can be higher if the violation occurs in a construction zone.

Gov. Gregoire also signed into law a measure that bans the use of cell phones while driving unless the driver is using a hands-free device. That law will take effect July 1, 2008, and will also carry a $124 fine.

(What are your thoughts)??

Illegal here. And it is good since it is really something that makes the driver concentrate less, with deadly consequences for others...

My thoughts are that it is a good idea. The fewer distractions while you drive the better. (maybe I should ban my grandkids--they're a huge distraction.) In my state, it's banned in the larger cities but not in the whole state. However, I live in a western state with a small population and many miles of roads through ranch lands that do not have heavy traffic. While I generally think the ban is a good idea, there are a lot of areas where I live where it's probably not necessary.

The government is trying to legislate the stupidity out of drivers operating motor vehicles...If one gets caught texting or using a cell phone, will a fine stop them from repeating the act?..In England, get caught using a hand-held cell phone and you go to jail...Again, will that stop the offender from repeating?

Here's the solution - turn the damn things OFF before you get behind the wheel...If one feels that there is something that just cannot wait until one is done driving, then one should pull off the road and deal with it, then hang up and TURN IT OFF!!..It is tough enough driving the way we're supposed to without compounding the process with something that has nothing to do with operating a motor vehicle.

Not yet. A "no texting" and "use a hands free" law has been signed in CA, but has not yet taken effect.

(It has, however, taken effect in MY cars, and a certain 17 year old recently renewed her familiarity with the bus service as a result.......)

I don't know if it is yet in Fl...but it should be banned everywhere. It has caused deaths that have made headline news. People simply can't do both.
