It depends on the time period.

The American Dream was conceived during the Great Depression. It's the idealistic view of everything being how it should be--a nice house in the subburbs, husband, wife, two kids (boy girl) and a pet. It's the white picket fence view. All Americans aspired to live like that because it was the ideal--esp in a time that had so much going wrong.

Immigrants at the time were trying to gain freedom and acceptances. People were coming over through Elis Island trying to make a new start on their woeful lives. They dreamt of having that idealistic view as well--house and kids--but it was more realistic. They didn't need to be wealthy--they jsut needed to be free and have some sort of income. It was a class thing.

Nowadays, the views are very skewed. It's more objective now--everyone has their own view of what's perfect and what's not. Some people view getting married as the dream, and some view having a mansion. The American dream isn't nearly as important as it used to be. The whole idea behind it, though, is getting what's perfect.

American dream is for people wanting to come to the US to achieve it while those born in the US need not dream about it because they are already in America and all they have to do is to have a good job and live the American way of life.

The American dream is the same for all Americans whether they come from Latin America or Anglo America. Basically to lead a good life and give their children a better opportunity than they had.
