Your action (putting the hoody in the can) was the proximate cause of the electronics being ruined. But for your action, it would not have happened. Hence, you are liable.

yes, it is fair that you would have to pay to compensate for the damage that occurred.
While you did not directly cause the damage (pouring the power aide on the electronics), you indirectly caused it by placing the hoodie in the trash. The person that disposed of the drink had every reason to believe that doing so would not cause damage as it was a trash can.
The fact that you did not know the electronics were in his jacket does not relieve the liability either.

It sounds fair to me. How would you feel if you spent your hard earned money on something and because someone played a mean joke on you it got ruined. I am sure you didn't know his stuff was going to get ruined but I bet if you have to pay for the things that did you will think twice before doing mean things to people in the future. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you because Karma is a *****!!!

It's absolutely fair.
You are a bully and have no regard for the rights of other human beings.
You got off really light. You need to learn to think about the rights of others or you will find yourself in prison.

You're the one that took his stuff in the first place. Take ownership of your actions and learn from your mistakes. Pay the man his $200.00 and make it happen efficiently

Be more careful with your "jokes". You should pay. You were the one that put it in the trash can.
