Citizens on the borders Sat,29,2006
by Joe Castro
News editor
Illegal immigration is one of the hottest issues burning in Americans’ minds. One debate I have been hearing a lot about is the vigilante movement to protect the U.S. border along Mexico.

One group among many on the border is called the Minutemen. This group of citizens gathered in Arizona last month to patrol the border and send illegal immigrants home. This might be a great way to stop illegal immigrants from crossing into the United States.
The Border Patrol spends millions each year, using high-tech equipment and thousands of personnel to capture people. Border Patrol agents must be highly trained and fluent in Spanish before they patrol, and still thousands of people cross over.

Students probably have not heard about the incidents of abuse by groups of citizens like the Minutemen. According to the Border Action Network, there have been thousands of incidents reported about people being dragged by their hair, beaten by night sticks and even shot at during their crossings.

The Minutemen are nothing new; there are several groups that have been actively patrolling the border and committing abuses against illegal immigrants as well as Mexican American citizens. These groups have also been advocated by many neo-Nazi and hate groups.

I’ll break for a minute to say I don’t think every citizen that volunteers to patrol the border is a racist. That is like saying that every immigrant that comes to the U.S. is here to commit a violent act, traffic drugs or take advantage of our freedoms. That is not the case, but it should be questioned whether it’s a good idea that citizens armed with guns and clubs should be left to patrol border areas with the assumption that nothing bad will happen. We should also ask how these groups are handling illegals and, when captured, are these groups accountable for human rights violations?

I think these groups are not accountable for abuses and need to be stopped or heavily regulated. I am not saying to do nothing about the illegal immigration problem. Instead of building walls or pouring money into the ineffective Border Patrol, we should look at improving identification programs and opportunities for workers to have some legal status, which is being done, but has flaws.

For those who complain that illegal immigrants are abusing health care programs and Social Security, remember that these people do pay taxes. In fact, according to an article in the New York Times, illegal immigrants paid roughly $7 billion to Social Security last year and $1.5 billion to Medicare.

Hand it to the Americans to want to do what the government is failing to do, but nothing good can come from allowing angry people to wander the desert hunting for Mexicans.

If the point should come that ALL those jobs we hear Americans Wont do become filled and Millions more Illegals Still want in and want jobs. Will you have any problem giving them YOUR JOB??? After all you do want them all here and anyone else that wants to enter. With the numbers growing daily at some point All those jobs Americans don't want will be filled. I say at that point all those in favor of ILLEGAL immigration give up there jobs so we need not DENY anyone.

There are some people out there that are so against immigrants that lives are being threatened. What has our country come to? Is there that much hate in this country that we would take the life of another? I am afraid to let people know my nationality in fear that someone will harm me or my children. Did it have to come down to this? What do you guys think?

To all these people that are against mexicans, and believe that they do not serve a purpose..... If it came down to it, would you take the blood, or an organ of a mexican if your life depended on it or would you refuse it and take your chances on waiting for something else to come along.

Who have no intention of staying but are only on their way to America. Is this because mexico fears that the Guatemalans will undermine mexicos own illegal endeavors here in the states and will funnel the american dollars to an even more desperate country leaving mexico without a "cash cow"?

Do you believe that there are "paid political agitators" at work behind the scenes of the current immigration debate throughout the nation.
I had a conversation with a person a while back who made the claim that they were part of a group who gets paid to agitate at political rallies.
Do you think that this claim is true or false?

I have an imposter, Those that know of me will easily spot this person by their Questions. The style is similar to one who usually posts "stupid questions of the day" . I have no remorse for what I have done to this person, real or imagined. I have sent Yahoo the particulars of this impersonation. My question remains, When will the criminal element amongst us be stopped?

A quick story of the past in a 1 2 3 version...

America true owners were Navite Americans & Mexicans, Than came the criminals(Whites)that discovered America and killed most of them, the rest they pushed into Mexico and Canada...Then went to Africa to get some slaves (Africans- Americans)..

Wow,No offense but those were true criminals, They discovered america and mess-up every one, know nobody knows were they were suposed to be..

People come on? Let's all forget everything we are all Americans, We can't fix everything that those criminals did over years and years of violence..... Who cares if the illegals want to come here, Let them come .. GET OVER IT!!!

Let the goverment deal with this ....

This is going to get out of hands if we don't stop all the hatred, We are all humans, who cares were we came from,or how we got here...We are all Americans know!!

Whatever happened to just American? Can't we just call ourselves American without the racial titles preceding? This is what we are is it not. Maybe there would be less division between us all if we change our perspective. We're simply Americans! What is so wrong with that?

Don't get me wrong I'm not racist or bigotted. I think its great to remember where you came from, but isn' t it divisive to our nation to always point out race? ie: Anglo-American, African-American,Native American etc . etc. I was born and raised in Canada but when I moved here and naturalized I became an American. Just curious if others think I'm out of line.

To all the comments about how natives got their land taken. First Off I am Indian (native American) and I am proud. If you have paid attention in school then you would know that yes, British and French did come hear and take the land, but the natives joined forces with the French and British side after being defeated by them. we natives fought for our land and fought damn hard and we lost. We took our loss with honor and excepted the new ways (well most of us) You should watch "Last of the Dogmen" It tells about what really happened. there were plenty of white folks who joined the native culture as well. You say that British and French fought unjustly. They did not abide by the laws of war, neither side did. In fact the most brutal thing that the whites did was at the battle of wounded knee. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that what the whites did was right, but how they fought and won was perfectly fare because nothing was civilized back then.

We are Mexican women from villages in the southern Mexico state of Guerrero. Our brothers and husbands have left us for work in the US.

We strongly support closing the US-Mexico border to illegal entry. We did not want our men to leave and we want them to return to us.

As we struggle as women, against the difficulty of our situation, we focus all effort on building a business to sustain ourselves and our children.

But we need the help of our husbands and our brothers to re-unite our families and to help us develop economic opportunity in the traditional fashion jewelry production industry that is the heritage of our parents.

Please close the US Border to illegal migration and send our men home to us. Thank you.

Best wishes from Mexico to all persons of good will. We should continue to be friends and respect each other.

90% of the US population may have come from migrant families but that makes no difference. That 90% earned their citizenship and fought fare and square for this country and also had their share of hard work. Back then the country allowed it, there were no laws. It is the Illegal immigrants today that are causing the problems. Earn your right to be in this beautiful country and there will be no problem. I know plenty of people who immigrated, but they earned their right first.
