I had less of a tax return this year than ever before - I am below the poverty line... and I even tutored kids as part of his stupid "No Child Left Behind" program...

but people who make 50-100k just feel like Bush has really helped people to not have to pay taxes... maybe for them it's true.

WA state spends approximately $10,500 per pupil per year on K-12 education, yet we have 4.0 GPA students entering college needing to take remedial math classes. We've had 7 or 8 major commissions investigating education and they all come to the same conclusion: change is necessary. Our governor, Christine Gregoire, has said for the sake of its children and economy, the state must turn out better-prepared students. Yet, the state stops short of investigating the effectiveness of the dollars already being spent.

How can we persuade our leaders that knowing which dollars are the most effectively spent is the starting point for turning out better prepared students?

some people think we should forget about the past and deal with what's going on right now. in my opinion, this is simply selfish and riciculous. those people need to think about what it would be like if they had been the victims of those unimaginable tortures and human experimentations. if they still don't get it, they might as well see the movie "Maruta". it let's you have a peek at hell. how much longer does Japan think it can hide its past, saying there is not enough evidence when Korean and Japanese old ladies who served as sex slaves are protesting in front of the Japanese embassy everyday. even some Japanese people admit it. adults can be so childish sometimes.

The way government works today is so last millenium: we register to vote, we elect people to represent us, and they govern from a centralized bureaucracy. Can we improve on this, esp. given modern technology?

Specifically, can we apply the "open-source" model that's increasingly popular now in technology (Linux, Wikipedia, etc.)? If so, what would that look like? And what are the main challenges, other than massive switching costs or disruption as we migrate/updgrade from one system to another?...

Sen. John McCain recently asked on this site for your suggestions on how to reduce wasteful government spending.

Answer no. 257 suggested "Elect a democratic president to the Whitehouse in 2008". In view of the powers that Bush has given himself under the Patriot Act, which allow him to ignore the wishes and votes of democratically elected members Congress, I thought that this was a fair and balanced observation.

So I was astonished to see that only 1 person had given it a "thumbs up", whilst 9 had given it a thumbs down.

My questions:

Is this yet another indication that Americans really don't care what the US president does, at home or abroad, just as long as he preserves the American way of life?

Do American voters realise that George Bush has more dictatorial power in the US than Hugo Chavez has in Venezuela?

In our democratic system the top post to be selected as per their experience in the public life mainly politics. My opinion is if we have related subjects only in that category, we may have very practical and brilliant candidates for the said posts, who may change the complete system, which may leads to the fast growth of the nation.
