A totalitarian government would control:
What books you can read
What type of music you can listen to
What you watch on TV
How you get dressed to go to school (example: uniforms)
What you learn in school
Plus it controls how your parents and others around you behave, which of course influnces you.

Democracy is mob rule, America is NOT a democracy, so here's how it might effect your life. America is a Constitutional Republic which operates under the rule of law. A democracy ebbs and flows with the will of the mob, a mob is usually a vocal minority and does not represent the true feelings of the majority. Either way as American politicians bring us closer to democracy and socialism your liberties will be traded in for entitlements that the mob desires.

Long story short don't believe everything you learn in your Government school, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence never mention democracy because it is dangerous. Good luck

The politics of the country in which you live affect you from birth through your parents, schools, city, county, state etc. You are now at an age where you are starting to make decisions for yourself and it's high time you begin to study all sides of the issues and begin forming opinions on how you are going to vote when you turn eighteen.
The fact that you are here in this forum and asking intelligent questions is commendable.
Welcome to young adulthood.
Edit: Well said Keith C. !

IT EFFECTS YOUR FUTURE AND THAT OF YOUR CHILDREN AND THEIR CHILDREN.

The Two greatest pieces of advice you will ever be given....

#1. No matter what side you choose, no matter how you vote (when you are old enough), ALWAYS pay attention to the issues. Study history and learn about our past failings and successes. Research what political candidates, laws, etc. are all about. Make a decision that you feel works to the peoples' best interest and stick with it.

#2. Invest in a ROTH IRA.
