Government - February 2007

[Selected]: All categories Politics & Government Government

Most people accept the institution of government because it has always been there; they have always assumed it was essential. People do not question its existence, much less its right to exist.

They brag about freedom struggle and how bravely they fought British. But all the brown sahibs and their kids are holding British passport and remain very loyal to the queen. Why is this contradiction?

So few people pay attention to anything of relevance in this country. Britney Spears' bald head got more attention than the beginning of Britain's troop withdrawal. The common excuse I hear is, "I can't do anything about it, so why bother?" How do you convince someone that they can do something about it? That it's their responsibility, to themselves and their children and their children's children to do something about it?
Or am I just over-reacting and at risk for a heart attack?

Yes, they do hold elections, have competing political parties, and appear to have reasonably honest government.

Yes, they have a vigorous free press which can and does fearlessly criticise the government without being shut down.

No, they deny the vote to an underclass, the people who live under Israeli rule in the Occupied Territories, identified by ethnicity - a thoroughly racist stance, an apartheid system.

No, they force people off their property so they can build homes on Palestinian lands which cannot be acquired unless you are Jewish, and they pay subsidies to encourage these squatters ("settlers", if you prefer to use a euphemism.).

Last election, the Dems placed attorneys in highly contested areas prepared to claim election fraud if they lost that particular election. Two years ago, in my state, Washington, there were three recounts where the Republican won the Governor's race, until some democrat pollsters found several boxes of ballots in a closet and they got a judge to allow them in tipping the balance by 200 votes for the Democrat. Now I have a fraudlent Governor.
