With 'friends' like that, who needs enemies?

It depends on the type of government you are talking about. While I don't think any form is a "friend," representative democracies take your money and restrict you based on social pressures. And what friend hasn't fallen prey to pear pressure?

Oh, no. Who do we have to battle constantly to maintain our basic Constitutional rights? The government. I don't care whether it's liberal or conservative, the actions that hurt us the most come from the government. Not just federal (income and other taxes); state (eminent domain for example) and local (zoning, for example).

I think the government is my friend when I think of how:
the police force keeps me safe
there are regulations to make sure that the water I drink and the air that I breathe are clean
that schools are doing their job right, etc.

But the bureaucracy in the government is the enemy.

with liberals in charge, i couldnt agree more. this country got along right fine until 1914 with no income tax at all and beyond the year 2000 until al gore installed a tax on social security with a tie breaking vote in the senate. why liberals cant leave our money alone is beyond me.
