In 1970, the federal government passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act in an effort to get both employers and employees to reduce hazards and injuries in the workplace.The act also encouraged companies to put safety and health programs into place. It is beneficial to everyone that the workplace be a safe and
healthful. Who is responsible for administering this act? When Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act, they also created within the Department of Labor a new agency
called the Occupational Safety and Health Administration(OSHA). OSHA is responsible for ensuring worker safety and issuing safety guidelines.

Under OSHA’s “General Duty Clause,” an employer is responsible for providing its employees “employment and a place of employment which are free of recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm
to … employees.”

Some of the rights granted to you include the right to:
• review standards and regulations;
• request information from your company on safety and hazards that may exist in the workplace;
• request an OSHA inspection if you believe there is a violation;
• ask for written information as to whether any substance in the workplace has potentially toxic effects; and
• file a complaint if you are disciplined or are
discriminated against for “whistle-blowing.”

Erm. It basically states that everyone is responsible for their own, and everybody elses, safety in the workplace. That a safety body must be formed out of the workforce. And that guidelines are followed to ensure safe working practices.

It's to minimise injuries sustained at work, because, really, injuries and sickness affect the goverments pockets more than anything else and harms the financial economy.
