How can we take steps towards improve our system of self government? Should we rid ourselves of labels such as liberals democrats, republicans, left wing, right wing, ect? Do most of us fell like we agree with bits and pieces of all parties? New system of voting? Public referendum?

When it comes right down to it and you observe the election returns the past few decades you will notice that the country is virtually split right down the middle.
We will never see the day when you see a 70% to 30% election result. Why? Maybe it is because we are not really being provided with the truth to come to a realistic conclusion.
We are not demanding the truth. We just want to vote for the guy that looks good and did something for us on a personal level or massaged our simple desires.
The Republicans favor those equal and above for the sake of the Republic and the Democrats favor the citizens, the working class and the poor below.
When we start looking for the merits of a person and what he can do for the whole of the country and not just for personal reasons we would come closer to uniting politically.
But it seems that we are not concerned with that.
"I'll vote for him again because I was able to...."
"I like the way he looks at his wife..."
"He just has that way about him that..."
This will not bring the US citizen together politically. It is going to require a commitment from the citizens for the country and not for selfish reasons.

As you can see from reading these answers, we have no common goals. The liberals want one thing and the conservatives want another. The very platforms upon which the two parties are based as so far apart that there is no chance of a compromise. We would more likely split the country down the middle and make two separate countries than reach a consensus. I would not be a bit surprised to see another civil war in this country before it's over. Our political ideals are so far apart that only two entirely different interpretations of the constitution can bring about mutual harmony.

Well, it's not like Republican and Democratic parties are in the law books. They are the dominant parties because people vote for them. Many times throughout history different parties have been dominant and then faded as new parties better reflected groups of people (when was the last time you voted for the Bull Moose party?)
Bottom line, as long as people only vote Democrat and Republican, those are going to continue to be the dominant parties. It's not like it's out of our hands, people. Just vote for other parties that better reflect your viewpoints. There are tons of them out there.

"ccguy" pretty much got it all, but-
Liberal Democrat voters that vote for people in office really should try to open up their eyes and see what is going on in the world. If only Bill Clinton wasn't president, the entire world would be a better place. If George H. Bush or even George W. Bush became president instead of Bill Clinton,
1. Saddam Hussein would have been defeated in the early 1990's and Iraq would have been free because George H. Bush was already trying to do that during the presidency he had.George W bush DID IT!!
2.Taxes in general wouldn't have went up, but down with a good Republican president.
3.Stupid laws wouldn't have been made
4.Innocent people wouldn't have to of died in that Aspirin factory in the middle easy when Bill Clinton had it blown up just to cover the "Monica Lewinsky Scandal" which was happening that day just to destract people from what was happening.
5. Clinton wouldn't have gave Nuclear Submarine plans to the Communist Chinese.
-Come on, if anybody wants to add something then...

-"smw" (one comment below me), is one of those type of people that never opens up their eyes and sees what is going on in the world. They just vote Democrat BLINDLY, well guess what, during Bill's 1st presidential election when Dole the republican and Ross Perot the Reformed party Guys were trying to become president, my parents who always voted Republican along with a heck of a lot of Republican people voted for Ross Perot because they liked him a heck of a lot better than that scum bad Dole and of course the even bigger scum bag Billy boy.

my neighbors?... uhh they are nearly all repubs that only care about preventing freedoms such as abortions, gay marriages, drugs, anti-war statements, and not paying any taxes to help poor people.
I personally am the opposite.
Common goals should be
limiting the power of small interest lobby groups, policing corporations, stop corporate financing for politicians, expand media ownership, get out of iraq and ask their forgiveness, increase worker unions or increase the taxes the of corps to be competitive with small business. kick doctors in the teeth by having standardized health care, kick the lawyers by legalizing drugs.....,

Great political platform - however completely unrealistic. Don't get me wrong - it would be great to actually come together as a nation. However, we haven't been able to do that since the exsistence of man (and woman). So - NOTHING will unite us politcally in 2008 or beyond.

First of all, we have to get rid of George W. Bush and all of his cronies. We must get out of Iraq. We need to improve our relations with our European Allies, Russia, and China. We need to put all of that money that is going into Iraq into Social Security for our baby boomers, who paid so that they could retire in peace. We need to raise funding for our universities, and raise the Pell Grant.

Right wing nut jobs aside..we need a viable third party that discusses real issues not just wedge politics that cause knee jerk reactions and sound bite moments. Unity 08 is a third party that is forming look it up on Internet. too soon to say it's viable or not but at least they are trying. it's not talk radio heads, or other crazies.

I would think a common goal is a regime change in the White House. Thank god we have term limits for presidents, because we're going to spend the next 10 years trying to undo the past 8.

Citizens don't unite unless everything is going very well within the country. If my office can't even get along with just 7 people, I can't imagine a whole country doing that.
