Politics & Government - 10 July 2007

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of things I can do to better spend my time then sitting online all day making obscure political arguments in the hopes that I will feel somehow adequate? I just started Yahoo Answers this week and was hoping the political section would be a forum for interesting viewpoints and informative answers about the government, not a "I know more random, out of context political quotes than you do!" So my question is: What do you like about this country? Not what do you like to complain about or what do you like to hate more, but rather - What Do You Like?

Is the pope unaware that the Eastern Orthodox is as equally old as the Catholics?

The former did not "branch off" of the latter. It was an even split in the 11th century. So is he uneducated and ignorant, or just manipulative and deceptive?

Florida's new law on deadly force?

What are your views on this topic? Could you see yourself using this law? there seems to be heavy crime here in south florida; do you think this law will help deter some criminals and help regular citzens feel more empowered and safe. Would you ever consider carrying a legal concealed weapon?

when i join the army reserve, if i am married will i recieve Basic housing allowence.?

when i join the army reserve will i recieve basic housing allowence while i am in basic training.(yes i am married)

the reason is i am the higher paid in the house, so i would need help paying rent.

My wife backed into a car and gave $200 to cover damage now owner say not enough I say matter is closed is it?

Wife backs into a car at store that was parked behind her blocking her in by an inconsiderate driver. When driver came back to her car my wife did not want to go though our insurance so she gave the girl driving car $200 to settle matter. Now young lady"s father calls and says that the mirror that was broken alone cost that much and wants to get estimates. I am leaning towards telling him that matter was settled when daughter took the money to settle matter and that if it was less he would not be calling to give some back. In addition his daughter was inconsiderate by blocking others in for 10 min and if I was driving I would not have stopped tell her car was pushed out of way or my truck was over it. I know it was my wifes fault legally but would I be correct to tell him to pound sand as the matter was settled when his daughter took cash?

Call police or child services?

Ohio. Im not sure how fast ethier would respond. My boyfriends brother home is full of crack heads. These is 5 kids, under the age of 10. A few extra adults too. The adults all smoke crack. Im not too sure of where and how....If they hide it fomr the kids or not. But they recieved some money, and smoked up one grand in not even a day. The "man" of house sometimes work, payday is a crack night also. DO I call police and explain to them...And maybe they can catch them in the act. Do I call child services, and hope they show up on a day they need to.....Child services have been called on them before, and they seem not to check too much cuz they have had cases closed on them. But I totally want to remain annoymosly. (sp)....

Is it not morally wrong for veterans' hospitals to be run for profit?

Don't wounded soldiers deserve more than just to line the pockets of some CEO who sits at home and sadly, and I can think of no other way to put it, watches the news and counts his profits from the dead and wounded statistics.;

Will a free health care system suffer the same problem as Social Security in being funded?

Social Security is under funded becuase there are to many old poeple and not enough workers to fund them, so in a free health care system wouldnt to many sick people drain the funds of the free health care to the point of it being unusable and underfunded? im not sure how the canadian or britain system works and sorry if my facts are off, i prob need to do more research.

how many wars America has won in its history as an independent country?

I am being pressured by a friend to name a single war we have wona aginst a foreign army or in a foreing land. He claims that we lost every single war, and WWII doesnt count because we entered the fight when the rest of the world has already been decimated after 5 years of fight. I could not come up with any satisfactory answer, except accusing him of being unpatriotic for doubting America's might and nobel causes. Is there any rational answer that I could use instead? Please advice.

Why is there a drive for English to be the official language of the US?

What are the arguments for and against?

I'm from Ireland and I was just curious as to why this has only recently become a national issue over there.
