He had the proper education and politcal background as well as a good record as governer of Texas. Had september 11 not happened, he would have been a normal president and people would have never thought bad of him. 9/11 put so many things into action, any president would have been disliked by now.
Why? Because in times like these you have to take action.... taking action is not always popular but it has to be done.
Many people loved Clinton, but he had a relatively easy Presidency. Even though he lied to congress about his immorality, he still got off easy. Had 9/11 happened in the 90's, he would have had to take similar actions and people would be blaming him for everything they blame bush for now.
2000-2008 was just a rough time to be the President of the United States. Bush has made some mistakes... but I think he has handled it as good as anyone could have.

they knew that the old John McCain wouldn't let these corrupt cronies get away with the crap they have during this administration, so they had Rove trash his character during the 2000 Republican primary season. They knew the voters would vote for the guy they disliked the least.

Well, depending on who you ask, he is either an idiot who can't put a sentence together or a brilliant master manipulator who wants to take over the world. Come on, you can't have it both ways...
I think he had the name recognition thanks to his father, which is why the GOP nominated him in the first place.
