I have a friend who works in a resturant as a server. When business is slow, the boss makes a few of them sit around and wait until (or if) business picks up. Sometimes this wait is 2-3 hours and it never does get busy so they go home with 3 hours of their time not compinsated for. Oh, and I guess they have to wait in the dingy basement now...

Is this legal? I'm in Michigan. Anyone know of where on the Michigan.gov website I can find out about this. I've looked a little and can't find anything.

Bernard Sanders is a self-proclaimed socialist running for senate in Vermont.

http://www.answers.com/topic/bernard-sanders

Answers says....
He is the only independent member of the House, and is one of very few self-described democratic socialists elected to federal office in the United States in recent times. Sanders is currently serving his eighth two-year term, and is giving up his House seat to pursue the open Senate seat to be vacated by the retiring Jim Jeffords in the 2006 Senate election in Vermont.

Socialism is an ECONOMIC term. It is the CONTROL of the means of production by government. Most socialist societies say they promote the good of the society over the good of the individual.

But when you lose individual rights, you lose ALL rights. You become nothing more than a number whos purpose is to satisfy the needs of the state. Does Vermont really support this?

America is considered the land of opportunity by many nations around the globe. Thousands of people desire to live in this country and go to great lengths to have that opportunity. "Immigrants come to America for many reasons, but mainly they come because it's the land of opportunity and upward mobility where achievement is more important than inheritance" (Zuckerman). Many who fill the immigration quotas are able to use legal means to reach the United States, while others depending on where they are from and their particular circumstances must cross the border illegally in order to reach their dream. Those who believe that all immigrants who wish to make a positive contribution to this society should still be welcomed point to the words of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who long ago in a speech to the Daughters of American Revolution proclaimed, “Welcome, fellow immigrants." Yet there are also many Americans, including people in positions of power, who claim the illegal immigrants are taking jobs away from the working class. We are a nation of immigrants and ever since the beginning of America. And the debate on the immigration situation has reach a level that the solution is no where to be found. Immigrants, particularly of Mexican descent, are being blamed for taking over U.S jobs, when in fact; the nation’s economy would crumble without them.
