Real good intelligence, use of Spec-op forces, "hearts and minds" ;ie: Civil Affairs units, using captured insurgents as double-agents; assassination of insurgent leaders, placing infantry units in towns and villages so they can work with the locals and win them over;use of the media to portray the truth and not biased reports of both sides.

You blast the main cities to rubble and you make the civilian population start pointing out the enemy so they would not be destroyed too.
Cruel...but it's better than a never ending war.

You can't find an enemy that hides in the civilian population unless you disregard the population and kill everyone (not a popular answer.)

So you don't! You pull back (not out) and see what develops. If it is a good gov. we did okay. If its another problem gov, we pop back in kill those in charge or claiming to be in charge...then pull back and let them try again.

Our troops should not be in the streets unless they are there to take the street and kill people (not police it.). Pull back to an all military base somewhere in the open desert and wait. If someone approaches, they are fair game.

If insurgents try to take over the town...sweep back in, kill those around and pull back to the base.

A better question is will this be the way of war for the future?Vietnam was the same as far as the enemy blending in.The only real way is for the people around the enemy whom deal with them in their daily lifes do something about it instead of just standing there(like in the Mosques)

looking at the Greeks

you will not win by going in after them

using civilians is blatently against the the two the Geneva convention and the Hague. one element that maximum persons forget... we are struggling with terrorist and insurgents... no longer a uniformed military... they do no longer would desire to play by potential of the regulations.... We do.
