In California, we have a bunch of measures that are Proposition 1A, 1B, 1C... etc, and then it starts with the 80s and 90s, like Proposition 86. Where do they get these numbers? Is it the same in other states?

They get numbered sequentially upon submission but then start again at 1 (I believe the max is around 200 or so before it starts over) so there are those propositions now that have the same as past years but it is several years. Prop 83 this time is numbered after the propositions from last election (they were in the 70's)

I have to say I was kinda confused this go round with the 1A - 1E, they are out of sequence and I don't remember an election when we had the same number with different letters... but this sight might give you some answers about them and their history etc.

In Ohio the first statewide issue is always Issue 1, the second is Issue 2, etc. County issues start wherever state issues end and local issues start after that. I have no idea how California number issues.
