I've heard (read) the minimization of immigrant soldiers' service and sacrifice. The argument: They JUST want citizenship. Yes, and some JUST want money for college. Some JUST want to get away from home. Some JUST want adventure. But over there, they care about and defend on another in a pit of hell that no self-proclaimed, pious expert on Americanism who has NEVER been there can understand. I hear the echoes of Vietnam-Era anti-Americanism, cloaked with a facade of patriotism. It IS American to sacrifice for freedom. EVERY troop, regardless of his origin, who stands shoulder-to-shoulder with my son or yours, deserves, along with his family, our honor and respect. His sacrifice, and the sacrifice of his family, EVEN if they are illegal, IS an American sacrifice. During Vietnam many in our country turned radically to an elevated sense of self-importance to justify hating some, if not all of our troops. Are you any different if you hate our immigrant troops, or even their families?
