A long time ago people started selectively breeding dogs to serve a purpose. Do you know what your dogs breed was originally designed to do?

My husband and I adopted a little beagle/dauschand mix in Feb. The shelter could only tell us that he had kennel cough, toy aggression and they found him on a major highway in Ft Worth Texas. We have had him for about 7mon now and he is the best dog! Anyway he has “possession aggression”. Anything that is his (his bed, food, toys, kennel) He gets mad if you move, touch or wash it. If you try to move his bed he growls and tries to bite. This isn’t the big problem. He is really protective. Sometimes he snaps at my husband when my husband and I are goofing off and hitting each other. Also if he does something bad (and don’t think that I am an animal abuser) he doesn’t liked to be spanked for it. For example today I caught him trying to eat food off of a plate and I spanked him for it (not hard) and he snapped and bite me. I love my dog and he is the best thing that has happened (besides my husband of course) But can anyone tell me why he would do this? (he's also very protective of kids)

Does anyone else here feel the same way? I volunteer at equine rescues on weekends and I'm disgusted with the owners of these horses! One Thoroughbred ex-racer was left in a stall smaller than a cross-tie! He couldnt even turn around! he had no fresh water and was up to his knees in dung! It just makes me sick to see horses like those in this video..... (warning, not for the faint of heart.... I could barely watch it)

Last night the cat brought in a baby mouse about 2 inches long. It was still alive and moving but it was so little we didnt think it would survive. So my mother put it outside on the ground to see if its mom would get it. In the next morning my mom went to see if it had left or had died but it was still alive and moves around a bit. So we brough it inside and put in into a box with a paper towel and grass and a small old beany baby. We also gave it a lil bit of warm milk in an eyedrop. We didnt think it would live the day but i got home and its still alive. I know it probably wont live but its eyes just opened and its been drinking milk and walking around abit more. What should I do to help keep it alive for as long as it can stay alive? I have a heating pad but should i put it in there under the paper towel or is he ised to the cold? What do tiny baby mice eat? What should I do I know it wil most likly die but it hasnt yet so anything you know would help.

I've stumbled across some info on it, and it seems to make sense if you think about it. I don't know anybody who does it at home willingly. Any thoughts? I should add that they're all indoor cats

I have a 3 month old puppy and an older dog of 5 years i would like to leave them together during the day but i can't because they play rough constantly. My puppy nips at my older dog and my older dog growls and wrestles the puppy they are not aggressive to each other but i am worried that if i leave them together they could get hurt. I separate them when they get too much but as soon as i turn my back they start again. Is this just because the puppy is young? i don't want her to grow up thinking it is acceptable to nip other dogs.

A few weeks ago, the upper part of my oranda's tail is shredded in the center near the base. I didn't know what caused it so I added salt and observed the fish for a few days. There was no fighting and all the other fish is fine. A couple days ago I noticed that the upper part of the oranda's tail is getting shorter and shorter. Is it ill? What do I need to do?

Hello, I have a 10 gallon aquarium. I was thinking about getting some live plants. Any suggestions for this size tank?

Also, does anyone know of a good website about live plants? Thank you!

::Details::
-10 gallon tank
-8 cory catfish (paleatus & julii)
-2 dwarf platy
-1 small sucker fish
-Black Tahitian Moon Sand
-Natural slate and a live plant
-20 gallon filter by Aquaclear
-Bubble wall for aeration
-Heater
--Haven't added any kind of chemicals or medications to the water other than a dechlorinator.
--There is no background on the tank.
I was changing the water and so forth recently, and when I took water out of the tank, it was literally a blue tint. So I know something has to be turning it this color, be it algae or a chemical in the water or something, I just don't know what. I've had this tank set up for about a year, I redid it last summer, replacing gravel with sand so the catfish would be more comfortable and changing out fake decorations with slate and real plants =]

My fish do not seem harmed by the colored water, they seem to have become a little too happy in the last month and I am now the proud owner of two brand new Julii cory cats, born in the tank =]
