Do they really understand peoples emotions?

Yes, they know to some extent our emotions. All animals feel.

Dogs vary in how smart they are. Some are like a 2 year old human, some can be as smart as a 7 year old. If you are happy, they feel happyness. If you cry, they will comfort you.

My favorite answer I've ever heard; Your dog is as smart as you allow him to be. The more you teach him, the more he knows.

Very intelligent. My dogs have always been able to sense when I am sad or do not feel well. They will pay much more attention to me, try to cuddle more and offer me other ways of comforting.

Dogs do some wonderful work with people in hospitals and nursing homes to help them to feel better and boost their spirits.

I couldn't imagine my life without pets -- I currently have 1 dog and 4 cats.

I have a very smart puppy. He is 11wks old and is completely potty trained and knows how to sit/shake.

I think that once a dog is used to you they can sense certain emotions like when you are mad, nervous, happy, sad.

Dogs are much smarter than we give them credit for. I can only imagine what he will learn at 6mo if he knows all of this now. :)

My dog is smart.. She can open the babygate and the door to the kids room.. She checks on them all night.. If one of them is crying and I don't wake up right away so comes and gets me... She know's when I'm sad.. She'll sit at me feet or put her head in my lap and when she's happy she smiles... She plays with the kids and "guards" us when my husband is not home.. She's great and we all love her very, very much..
