I have recently bought a 9 year old Miniature Horse stallion who had been badly handled and abused until he was 4, and then left unhandled ever since. I do not know what they have done to him but he has absolutely no trust in humans at all.
He will come to me to snatch some food, but even the slightest movement will make him panic and retreat. Even talking to him softly or clearing my throat is enough to make him panic and run away, taking quite some time to coax him back to me again.
Not being able to move without him panicking and running away means I can't even catch him, but when I have been able to catch him (he has a lead attached all the time), as soon as he feels the pressure on the lead, he panics so bad that he will rear up, try to kick me and failing that, he will then bolt, whether I'm still holding on or not.
Since I can't touch him without him being frightened, and I can't even talk to him reassuringly without him taking off, I am at wits end as to how to gain his trust!

My maine coon is very friendly to others. Its not that she goes out running to them as she goes for birds when she finds them sitting on the window pane. I also have a persian breed and she is also friendly to her. But whenever she sees some other cats from our neighbourhood she behaves in this fashion.

when i got home from work lastnight my boyfriend informed me that my kitten ate his salsa! he had left it out on the coffee table when he got up to get something to drink, by the time he got back a good bit of it was gone. I looked at the indregients to make sure there was no onion powder. Im a little worried about him, he seemed fine again this morning...should i worry to just expect him to get the shits?

I had him on Eukanuba but the vet suggested to change it to Merrick Puppy Plate after he got sick. now he seems worse, he has had diarrhea for days and has been throwing up a little bit. Is this normal when changing the food? He is eating it ( seems to love it actually) and drinks water as well. He doesn't behave differently, still playful and sweet..
Anything will help.

it really bothers me when people let their cats out. i love my cat to pieces and it makes me sick to my stomache evry time i see a dead cat in the road. actually, it makes me sick to see any animal dead in the road, but house pets really get to me. i do not let my cat outside at all. she is perfectly happy, and healthy in every way. there is alot of things that can happen to them out there. i have actually seen a very large hawk take off with a cat. talk about horrible. please love your animals and keep them safe in your home.

I have an old dog who lays down most of the time and can only go for short walks because of arthritis. He doesnt cough when he exerts himself, only when laid down mostly at night. He is not over weight. There is no discharge from his nose and seems healthy apart from that. I dont think it is kennel cough as my other dog doesnt cough.

What's the longest your cat has been gone and returned home? My baby, Dixie(who is 9 months old), has been missing since New Years Day. I am really beside myself with worry! I don't live near a busy highway, I know my neighbors, and I have a huge wooded area behind my house. Any ideas on where to look? Sucsess stories? I have had several outdoor cats go missing and return home months later, but not indoor ones.

Not to mention, my other indoor cat, Skittles, misses her dearly!

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

I have a question for Zawni2004. I went into the catagory of "birds" hoping I could find an answer as to why I can't get my Quaker Parrot to stop biting. I have raised, cockatiels, parakeets, and bred them of course. A friend of mine found this parrot in her backyard, After putting an ad in the lost and found, no one claimed it and she asked me if I would take it, but warned that he bit. I bought books on this bird, asked the vet and not one seems to know how to stop this bird from biting. I have a sign on the bottom of his cage that says "I Bite". so people won't stick their fingers near him. I love him, he talks, laughs, he is so funny. When he tries to bite me, I yell "no bites" he walks away, but still repeats this behavior. So Zawni, did your Quaker bite? If so, did you get him to stop or what. Thanks to anyone who can help

I have read a few other questions regarding pit bulls and other "dangerous" dogs, and have been shocked by knowing that insurances can make pet decisions for you.
Listen, I do believe that the owner should be responsible for its dogs, but that doesn't mean that you can't have certain breeds. I think the government should limit itself to controlling where these dogs are being kept. These are living beings we are talking about, and we treat them as if they were commodities.
It is almost like insurance companies saying that you can only have two children, one boy and one girl, and if the girl has bad temperament, then she should be destroyed.
I fully understand that some dogs are a little mean, but that's why the owner of such dogs should attend training and obedience classes regularly, until the dog behaviourist is satisfied with the dog.

We've recently been given a wild Rainbow Lorikeet (not too sure of age) and we just want to know the best way to have it feel secure and safe and not be scared every time we go near him/her. Atm he screeches when we go near it. Its only been 4 days since we've brought it home. Should we be waiting longer? Thankyou...

My 16 year old chihuahua seems to have lost most of her sense of smell, only being able to smell food items if they are within a half inch or so of her nose, would like to know if this is common?

Also, anyone who has suggestions or advice for making her life as good and healthy as possible. She has cataracts on both eyes, has just a small field of blurry vision, and has also lost all her teeth but a few molars, and is hard of hearing.

She seems happy, content, and spends most of her time sleeping burrowed in an electric throw next to me on the couch (I am homebound). Other than the things mentioned above, she has a heart condition, but still gets around well and does not seem in pain. Any helpful advice welcome! she is my sweetie. :)

My 3 year old mastiff/boxer mix can't resist eating the cat's feces, RIGHT out of the litter box! Is there a way to prevent this? I tried putting the litter box up higher, for instance in the cat tree, but it's an eyesore way up there. Is there any special spray to keep my dog away, but keep the cats still going there? Or maybe a special kind of kitty litter! ... That would be nice.
