Hi,
I have freeze branded a lot of horses and cattle. My best guess, from watching the animal's reaction when the branding iron is applied, is that it stings momentarily then stops. You have to remember that a freeze branding iron is almost indescribably cold and the cold numbs the area almost instantly. You do not have to numb the area beforehand: The extreme cold of the branding procedure itself numbs the area.
When freeze branding a gentle horse we don't even feel it's necessary to put them in a chute or restrain them. Their skin flinches when the branding iron first touches them, then they just stand there. All that is needed is a regular halter and lead rope and someone to hold them. Again, this assumes a horse is accustomed to being handled. If the horse has not been handled or simply has poor ground manners you will probably be better off putting them in a chute so they can't move and botch the brand.
Because freeze branding is soooo different than hot or fire branding many people use the term freeze marking.
That freeze branding is painless is one of its two main advantages over hot branding (the other advantage is the extreme visibility of a freeze brand compared to a hot brand). I used the word "painless" a moment ago because I believe the reactions horses and cattle show for a second after the branding iron is applied is surprise or mild discomfort, not pain. There is a difference.
Every horse I own is freeze branded. I love my horses and I think freeze branding is one way to show it. A horse that is lost after a natural disaster or that is stolen needs to have a way to be returned to its home and freeze branding is an excellent way to achieve that.

Branding a horse may sting a little but itll stop after a few seconds. The area will numb afew seconds after being applied. its like piercing ur ears or gettin a shot. all freeze branding does is it just freezes the hair u place the brand on. the only reason it should hurt is if u put the brand on a open cut. So no branding a horse does not hurt. Freze branding just makes the symbol u have more visible. So u have nothin 2 worry bout when branding ur animal. if u want 2 double check i suggest u go 2 a licensed vet and ask him/her. have fun.

Freeze branding is relatively painless for the horse, especially compared to hot iron branding!!!
Freeze branding is really freezing the hair that the brand is placed on, and unlike a fire brand, is better seen and harder to cover, or change. Especially if the horse gets stolen.
Hot Iron branding actually burns the skin and hair on the horse, and is extremely painful, and can either get infected or botched.
And its very easy to change.
Remember a horses tolerance of pain is much much higher then ours. Hope that helps.

Providing the person applying the brand is experienced, and does it swiftly and firmly, freeze branding doesn't "hurt" a horse, it merely stings them momentarily. It just kills off part of the hair follicles and results in the hair growing back white, thus displaying the brand.
As per one of the other replies, freeze branding is a lot less painful than the traditional method of "Hot Iron Branding", which literally burns the skin follicles so that the hair never grows back, and causes scabs and sores after application.

When the branding block is first applied, it must sting momentarily, but the fact that it is so cold numbs the area very quickly.
Of all the horses I have had freeze marked, not one has ever tried to run away as it's been done. After the first one has been applied (and they realise it's no big deal), they seem more than happy to munch a carrot while the rest of the numbers, or letters, are applied...

nicely i don't have a horse yet after I get one i pick to freeze style her too. i might want to assert a lip tattoo might want to be suitable like som1 already stated a freezbrand is all white and on account that ur horse is white, nicely that doesn't extremely artwork. the in consumer-friendly words reason to get a micro chip might want to be so u might want to guarantee that she is your horse yet that could be AFTER she is stolen and when you locate her lower back (which shall we be straightforward might want to be no longer achieveable!) so i might want to probable basically get a lip tatoo and keep a watch on her at ur shows. if ur extremely nerve-racking basically have someone stay at her stall 24/7 (take turns for sure!) and do not they have like nighttime watchmen for the tremendous shows? i might want to imagine they did b/c ppl are not very probably to scouse borrow a horse in wide day gentle so i don't believe of u extremely favor to be nerve-racking. sorry i could not help more effective!

The pain will last about as long as a blister would hurt.

Of course it hurts!
It probably isn't much different to us having a tattoo or getting a wart or skin cancer burned off without pain killers though.

Any time living tissue is damaged and the area hasn't been numbed beforehand, there will be pain.
