i know they have fun and want to be outside, but no amount of training to stay away from the road can keep them safe from other things. fences can not keep them safe from things like hawks or eagles.i just saw this happen the other day and then i saw a dead cat in the road yesterday and im very touched by it

Finally!!! A smart cat owner!! Do you know why people let their cats out? Because they're stupid and irresponsible. People don't think before they let their cats out. Do they not know how many people hate cats and set out antifreeze for them? What about getting hit by a car? Or some kid abusing it? Or it getting attacked by a dog or getting in a cat fight? And what really gets me is the people who say that they've let their cat out for how many years and nothing's happened YET.
Yeah. YET. Just because their cat's been lucky so far doesn't mean something won't happen to it. Why do people even want cats if they care so little for them? And isn't it just common sense to know that your cat will live longer and stay healthier if it's inside? And please, save it when you say having a litter box in your house is unhealthy. What about the dieseases your cat can bring home? I agree with you 100%!!!

My oldest cat is nine years old and has always been an indoor outdoor cat. The cat is very attached to me in ways that I can't explain, but there has never been a time that she hasn't come when I call her name to come inside.
We recenetly moved to a new home and it faces a very busy street, and we also signed a contract stating that if we have cats, they have to be indoor pets. So, needless to say my cats (my middle oldest was allowed out as well) are not allowed to go outside now. My male cat (the middle one) is going a little stir crazy and is constantly, desperately hoping that we will let him out, while my 9 year old cat has become very depressed. She does nothing but lay on top of her cat tower all day either watching her surroundings, or sleeping. I spend time playing with all three of my cats everyday (the kitten has never been allowed outside), but this doesn't seem to be enough, so now I am considering harness traing all three. I know the two oldest will be harder to train then the kitten, but I figure a little outside is better then no outside. Point of my rambling is that every cat has a different perssonality, and though your cat may be content being an indoor cat, some are not. As much as their owners insist on keeping them indoors, they want out. Cats have a great sense of "home" and generally do not wonder off too far. It is unfortunately when one gets hit by a car, but I blame that more on the driver then the cat. I've stopped for many a animal crossing the street, and any one who has hit an animal was either not paying attention or was intentionally trying to run the animal over. I agree with the person that stated that people get hit by cars too.... I live in Las Vegas... we have no hawks, and a very high number of padestrian deaths.

starting to be up my cats have been constantly indoor/outdoor cats. they could are available in to snuggle and consume, yet performed out section lots of the day. My mothers and dads had a extensive backyard with wood and the cats could in simple terms wander around the community. All of my mothers and dads pals knew our cats and performed with them as properly. on account that my mothers and dads homestead replaced into in a suburb there wasn't particularly the possibility of untamed animals which you come across interior the county, or the rushing automobiles of a city. It replaced into kitty cat paradise. Now I stay in a house off a school campus. i wouldn't in any respect dream of letting my cat outdoors simply by fact of all the site visitors. i think of it relies upon on the place you reside and what vaccinations your cat has had. Cats prefer to be outdoors yet some circumstances, like residing in a city, in simple terms are not applicable. this is consistently safer to maintain your cat interior, yet cats are happier while allowed a sprint extra freedom.

The only rational reason people would have for letting cats outside is so they can do their business outside because they are too lazy to clean a litter box. However, even this is counteracted by the risk of them picking up fleas or some other parasite. De-fleaing a house is far more difficult than cleaning a litter box.

Boy did you hit a nerve. I agree with you 100%. I think the people who allow their cats out in the city are either just irresponsible and not really animal lovers or they are stupid. It makes absolutely no sense to me and it drives me nuts to read some of these posts. Luckily there are a few of us here who can help make people aware of the hazards of outdoor life for cats.

I believe that if you truly care about the welfare of your pet that you would do whatever it takes to keep them safe...they depend on that.
I live out in the country and feed ferals (homeless cats) in my backyard (they all have been sterilized and vaccinated) so I like to take my inside cats with me to feed them when the weather is good.
I enjoy watching them chase things and climb the trees but they know when it is time to go in for they will follow me or run up to the door and wait.
I think that cats are much better off being inside and alot safer.

Only one of my cats goes outside. If it were up to me I wouldn't let him out. We live in the middle of nowhere and there are woods and fields for him to play in but it still isn't safe. There are bears around and I have also seen a cougar near our house. I would keep him inside but he claws up the entry ways if you won't allow him out and he will quit eating and lick places of his fur until it is bleeding if he isn't aloud outside. We had never planned on letting him out but he was born a barn cat also so it is his natural instinct to want to go outside.

Most of the time my cat stays inside. I do let him outside for fresh air and exercise, and he ocassionally kicks the dog out of the kennel and sleeps in there himself! I am so serious. That cat of mine is an absolute nutter!

I let my cats outside cause they need fresh air and exercise. They like to play chasing with my daughters and they enjoy sunbaking. They are trained not to cross roads. As I used to live on a very busy and they were not allowed out the gate. They'd sit on the side fence and annoy the dogs next door and had fun.
But now that I've moved they prefer to stay indoors. I chuck them outside when I think they need some exercise. They generally stay on my verandah or go onto the grass to sunbake. They also know that they are not allowed to kill things and have to home by 5pm so they are inside. Not all cats can be inside cats.

Because some people insist their cats "need" to get outside, and that they are "trained" to never go out of the yard, blah, blah, blah...right up to the day they find them dead in the road.
