I have an old dog who lays down most of the time and can only go for short walks because of arthritis. He doesnt cough when he exerts himself, only when laid down mostly at night. He is not over weight. There is no discharge from his nose and seems healthy apart from that. I dont think it is kennel cough as my other dog doesnt cough.

Take him to the vets, my dog had a cough, and was taken straight away to the vets, she said it was "kennel cough", but I was not happy with that, as I have heard dogs with this complaint, he went in on the Thursday for an x-ray and I had a phone call in the afternoon to say they could not do anything for him, PLEASE if you love your dog investigate, as I had my dog home for Friday and Saturday and Saturday evening he had to leave me for the bridge.it was throat cancer and it had spread to his lungs.Good Luck, hope everything is well.

even as uncertain continuously go on your vet. Kennel cough isn't some thing to take gently, if it truly is what your dogs has. In it`s early degrees it would want to be pretty contagious and continues to be consisting of your dogs for months. As a breeder and kennel proprietor I had my team come down with it many years in the past. I had 4 of my dogs entered in a dogs teach and trial and had to tug all of them and lose my get entry to fee`s. options you my guy`s probable picked it up at a teach or Trial besides. I`m no longer saying Kennel Cough is the reply, yet continuously go on your vet for the right analysis and remedy. he or she has a techniques more effective journey then any answer you'll receive in this web site. good success

He needs a vet check, mention the coughing. If he has fluid building up in his lungs it will affect his breathing and his heart and it may be worse when he's been resting for a while; breathing heavily on a walk may help him clear the fluid.

It may be to do with heart failure though the lack of cough on exertion deems this unlikely.
It may also be a foreign body or dryness, do you have central heating, does he have enough to drink?
Also is he on drugs, what about side effects?
