I have and ride an ex-racer.
They take some skill and patience to re-train to a riding horse.
Some of the things you do whan you ride are cues for a race horse.
Race horses learn to balance themselves on the bit and they like to have lots of equal pressure on the reins to get their balance so by pulling back on the reins they do not stop but in fact go faster.
They do not know or understand leg cues. They do not know to stand still to mount they are trained to be walking when the Jockey is given a leg up. They are moving all the time when some is in the saddle. They are trained to bolt out of a gate and run like hell and take about a 1.4 of a mile or more to stop. Stopping is the big thing they need work on.
If you are looking at re training one get some help from someone who has done it before. There are things done on the track that you have no idea about and you can be hurt by a horse just beacuse you did not know that was a cue to go faster.
They are more reactive to things than some horses. Most are scared of things like cows and other animals but do well with tractors and machnery. There are some great web sites and yahoo has a few groups that deal with these issues and by joining one of the groups you can get tons of great information.
One is retrainstbs look for it with the Yahoo groups. Lots of good info and experienced people.

Horses fresh off the track usually need a letting down period, where they are allowed pasture turn out and time to adjust to just being a horse. They require lots of patience and it is not a job for novice horse owners or trainers. Each horse is different. Some naturally have a more laid back personality, while others will remain high strung even with retraining. One good thing is that horses from the track have usually been exposed to lots of different situations, which will help when retraining. They can usually go on to have very successful careers in dressage or jumping and can even make a nice trial horse. We have an ex-racer at our barn who is a favorite with all the kids and is used extensively for trail riding.
