I had him on Eukanuba but the vet suggested to change it to Merrick Puppy Plate after he got sick. now he seems worse, he has had diarrhea for days and has been throwing up a little bit. Is this normal when changing the food? He is eating it ( seems to love it actually) and drinks water as well. He doesn't behave differently, still playful and sweet..
Anything will help.

Do NOT listen to the person who said switch back to Eukanuba. Eukanuba is a horrible food and you are lucky you have a vet that is concerned about pet nutrition (most vets recommend garbage foods).

Because Merrick is such a better quality food, you need to switch your dog over slowly. Doing it to quickly will upset their digestive system. Merrick is a very nutrient dense food and your dog is used to eating one with a lot of fillers that was really of no benefit to its health.

The other thin that causes diarrhea is over feeding. Again, Merrick is going to be much more nutrient dense so you don't need to feed as much. When a dog is overfed, it will cause loose stools.

So, here are two things to be cautious about. If the problem doesn't go away, go back to your vet, and see if there are other problems...worms, etc.

Congrats on the puppy. I hope this helps....oh, and I hope you continue to feed high quality foods.

A drastic change in food will give them bowel problems and may upset their bellies. I would keep a close eye on her hydration, the clearer the urine the more hydrated they are (just like in humans) Keep an eye on the weight. If it does not subside in a couple days take her to the vet. Another thing to consider is Parvo. Same symptome but also lethargic and dont want to eat. If it is Parvo she will not make it a couple days it is swift. You may give your vet a call today.

For some dogs it is always a good idea to gradually lead them into new food until you find out just how they will react. Always tke the old food and mix small parts of the new food into it when you are feeding. Gradually increase the new food and back off the old food. You will find both you and your puppy will both be happier.

MY VET TOLD ME TO CHANGE FOODS, USE 1 PART REG. YOGURT TO 3 PARTS NEW FOOD. tHE YOGURT COATS THEIR TUMMY AND MAKES TO NEW FOOD NOT SO HARD TO DIGEST. IT HAS WORKED ON MY PUPS, AND I STRONGLY SUGGEST IT.

IT'S VERY NORMAL ACTUALLY, THEIR LITTLE TUMMIES GET USED TO ONE TYPE. IMAGINE ONLY EATING CHICKEN EVERYDAY ALL DAY, THEN CHANGING TO BEEF. iT PROBABLY WOULDN'T BE GOOD. aND THAT'S WHY VEGETARIANS CAN'T EAT MEAT SINCE THEIR BODIES ARE SO USE TO OTHER THINGS. TRY IT, I BET YOU'LL SEE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR SWEETIE. GOOD LUCK!
