I have had my male cockateil, Prince for 8 years. He was bought from a petstore and learned the "step up" command within 2 days. However, he is very territorial of his cage, will hiss and be mad at people who get near it...even to put food in his cage. When he is out of the cage...he likes attention for just a few minutes..then gets cranky and warning bites. He also is very picky with his food and only eats a small variety of seed from his food dish. I really would like him to be more friendly and I just don't konw how to help him. Any ideas?

I am a longtime fish keeper, with experience in goldfish, live-bearing tropicals, and African Cichlids so I have some basic know-how but fully understand that saltwater aquariums are completely different and a lot more difficult. I have been thinking about it for years and am finally ready to get my first saltwater aquarium. I have done tons of reading and research, but want to know from those out there with experience, what books or web sites would you recommend I read before getting started? Also, I have a 55g aquarium-not reef ready...is it reasonable to use it, or would you suggest only using on already set up for saltwater? What are the best filters to use? Can I use the same filters from my fresh water set up (HOB filters w/biofiber, enough to filter a 120g aquarium, being used on a 55g)? What substrates would you suggest? I have super rinsed play sand for my Cichlids, lots of work to rinse but looks beautiful, would that work? What other tips or suggestions do you have?

I have four cats - two of which love to pee on the carpets. That alone was a real pain but now my son has developed allergies to them so we finally had to move them outside. I have a large horse barn and we converted a stall into a "room" for them - they have been "indoor cats only" up until now. I want to train them to go outside over the next while but I have to give them time. They are not used to the cold, so I bought them a heat lamp but I want to make them a box to put the lamp in. I am not sure how hot these get, if I fit the lamp right into it or if I have to do something else. Any suggestions would be really great. Thanks!

Hi, I'm in the process of socializing an adolescent feral cat who lives outside of my work. Before taking her home I need to medicate her, she looks like she has conjuctivitis and sounds like there is an upper respritory infection. (I have a cat at home) I'd like to get my hands on some Clavimox but my vet won't do that w/o an office visit. I've already wormed her and garlic is getting rid of the fleas.
Any Suggestions? (I've already taken 2 of her siblings and they tested feline aids and leukemia negative)
Thanks!

My 14 year old cat, Smokey, has a nasty habit of scratching the furniture. We've tried various methods over the years to deter her from this habit: spraying her with water, yelling when she does it, Softpaws, not to mention the wide variety of scratching posts that have been available at one time or another in the house. My youngest cat is post-trained just fine, but her mother refuses to budge. This is now becoming a serious problem because my mother is getting new furniture for our new house, and she's made it very clear that if my eldest cat even LOOKS like she's going to take a swipe at it, the claws will come out on both cats. She knows the warnings and risks of declawing, but she REALLY doesn't want her new furniture destroyed. Is there any way to train my cat to stop taking tearing into our chairs and sofas, or will the life of her claws be cut tragically short?

P.S.: She's a semi outdoor cat who likes to scratch tree bark; are there any posts that simulate it?

I'm not critisizing or condemning anyone. I'm really just trying to understand the other side of the argument. No smart *ss or p*ssy comments. I want to understand the logic behind getting a pet but then not having it around you.

Does anyone keep their dog outside all the time? And why?

She is mostly black with a few white hairs throughout her whole coat. In certain seasons she has a brownish color on her muzzle and flank. Would you classify her as a black, black bay, blue roan, or grey?

I have a 3 year old pitbull that is having her first liter of puppies. She always was a inside dog and is very obediant. She even sleeps inside everynight. I made her a bed with blankets and pillows for her to have her babies. Will she have them there where I want her to or will she make her own bed somewhere in my house?

We all know of the two I am speaking about. you know..the two people who "give it to you like it is and not what you want to hear" but really they're just rude, with very little knowledge other than common sense? Has anyone ever reported them?

My sister gave me her canary back in the early winter and he was generally pretty happy with the move here. He would fly out of his cage and sing alot and sit on top of his perch on his cage and just sing or look out the window. He just finished molting (about a month ago) and he still won't come out of his cage or sing anymore. All I get now are little chirps every now and then. I even put the nature music station on for him to listen to but still barely nothing. Why is this happening and when will he come out of his cage and sing for me again?

I have a yorkshire terrier and he just turned a year old. I bath him every week and clean his ears but for the past 2 weeks or so hes done nothing but scratch and whine at his ears. I check them and they have a dark wax in them. I called my vet and the assistant said it may be mites so I bought the medicine she recommended but his ears are still in the same shape as they were before I started using the medicine. It breaks my heart to know hes in pain because of his ears. An ear infection is the only thing I can think of that it could be and ever since hes been digging at his ears he has a slight odor to him. Help please.
