They also bark in the day but noise pollution drowns out there sound.. Dogs will hear each other easier at night because its quieter and the sound of a bark will travel further. Therefore when one starts barking it triggers off the other dogs barks.. They will also hear things during the night like a movement outside, again because its so quiet and their hearing is so sensitive it will pick up the slighest thing..

My dog barks either during the day or at night. She usually barks at night because she sees something move outside and thinks its a burglar or something. Usually she does it because she thinks it will protect our family. Very annoying though.

Well, you mean why do they bark MORE at night? If so, then its because things are quieter at night, so they can hear more than in the day (their hearing is flippin awesome in the day, too). So they hear the stuff, and bark.

Well, mine don't. I find that the only ones who bark all night are the one's who's owners don't let them inside. It amazes me how many animals are left out all night, all winter. Back to the question...I think maybe because there are a lot of critters out at night. Racoons, skunks, opossum, depending on where you live of course. I have a few neighbors who only let their cats outside at night because there's a lot less traffic. Speaking of less traffic, there's less noise during the night to cover up the sounds of all those little critters running around. Plus maybe they can't see what they're hearing.

Just my opinion.

Probably because nighttime is much quieter, and so any sounds made at night are more keenly heard by dogs. Dogs have fantastic hearing but they don't have great vision as a rule, and can't see in the dark, so their protective instincts are probably much sharper during the night hours.

For the same reasons they bark during the day. To warn "bad guys"; to let cats, squirrels and rabbits know they are unwelcome; to communicate with other dogs; and to remind their owners that they are still outside and would like to come in where it is warm and comfy.

The bark during the day too. Why do you talk at night?

They hear something that interests them. Somebody passes by the house, or another dog barks in the distance.
If it is your own dog, and it is in the house, it probably wants attention. If you get up, the dog knows its ploy worked.

Because their owners leave them isolated outside at night. My dogs either sleep on my bed or in their crates in my room, and they sleep quietly through the night (well, aside from the one's snoring :-P)
