I have a 1950s ranch, we are doing blown in insulation next week, ordering thermal drapes soon and will be caulking the outside of windows, would I be better off letting the dog out to go to the bathroom via the attached garage or thru the sliding glass door over the winter, both open into my kitchen. I have double pane windows, can I still put plastic up? What kind is the most efficient, we live in iowa by the way zone 5a can I use the spray foam in the basement where vent floes go out? do I need to put the silver tape on the seams of my furnace if so where do I NOT put it? should I put a cover on my water heater? it is from nov of 06, can you think of anything else I need to do? we will clean the gutters out for the last time once the leaves are all down

We have a wall that needs to be about 60% replaced. I know that we are going to need to buy more brick for that project, which makes the new problem ~ the new bricks aren't going to match the old (1860's) brick, so I was thinking that since the wall is in the back of the house we should take it all that way down & replace it 100% with new brick. I'd want to buy brick that matches the old brick as close as possiable & then use the old bricks that are still in good shape to replace the broken ones in the main part of the house, then have the intire exterior repointed.

BTW - I'm not sure if this matters but there are 3 rows/layers/walls (not sure what to call them) of brick around the whole house, anyone know why?

I just bought my house in may and now that winter in on its way I'd like to winterize the sunroom. there are 7 screens with the panel size of around 3x5 . I was wondering what you would think the cheapest way of making this rooms winterized? the frame is all alumium and i wasnt too sure if double stick tape and plastic would stay on there. I was thinking about getting customer glass to put in there, but I think that would cost way too much. any ideas would be appriciated :)

Our breaker box does not have a breaker for these kitchen outlets (though I did reset the master just in case). I also tried the little red/black button on one of our outlets. Still no luck. What's wrong?

I have a light fixture that is less than 6 months old (closet/kitchen/hallway) that takes a 9-inch round fluorescent bulb and it quit working. I bought a new bulb and it still doesn't work. If you plug the bulb into the fixture, there is a slight glow where the plug is and if you touch the bulb the glow will grow further. This is a new fixture and I have tried 3 new bulbs (which are supposed to last for 5 years the box claims). Does anyone know what could be wrong with this fixture or if there is a way to fix it? I would rather not have to go out and buy yet another new fixture if I don't have to. Is this a possible ballast problem or something else and could it be fixable?

Can we use schedule 40 pvc for a butane line? Meaning from butane tank to house. I know you aren't supposed to, but is it possible? We live in the county, so we don't have to worry about specific codes. Thanks for all your help.

We had work done on my toilet about a month ago. I can still smell sewer fumes in there, but I've recently quit smoking so my sense of smell is very sensitive. My parents' senses are very dull and I can't convince them of how bad it really smells. They won't call the plumber back because "There's nothing to tell him to do." The fumes get really bad when I turn on the fan. I haven't gotten sick yet, but I've read that it's quite possible. Is there anything I can do myself, like caulk the floor seam? Or should I just insist on calling the plumber back?

Benefit of gas vs. electric. Do they save money over normal water heaters?

We have a newer zoned oil furnace hot water baseboard heat. We never turn on the upstairs or basement only the main floor. I put up plastic sheets going up stair and to cut off the kitchen area. The thermostat stays at 62 for the entire winter day and night. If we go away I turn it down to 58. We use a kero heater in the livingroom and basically spend our winters in this one room. It is so cold in the bedrooms literally you can see our breath. When doing dishes the water hurts my hands because its so cold in that room. We spend about 100 dollars a month on heat between oil and kero. This is too much, we need some other way to save money? We can not afford to get new windows ( they are older but do have storm windows ) we have insulated every thing we can, the house is old (1862 ) plank built there is no way to insulate the walls because of that. What other hints or ideas can we do to survive another winter. Money wise its hurting us.

My nephew and his 3yr old sister(both children are okay and no one is hurt , I was @ work when this all happened.) let the bathtub overflow. There is a tons of water everwhere. On the side where the bathroom is located the water had soaked the carpets in the closets and at least a foot of carpet is soaked into the rooms across the way from the bathroom area. I don't know what to do? I have removed part of the carpet and have purchased an area carpet to cut and replace a least a spot of the carpet but I don't know what to do? I pulled up part of the carpet to keep the subfloor from becoming extremely damaged by the water. My mother told me that water from the 2nd floor was leaking into the kitchean/dining room thru the light fixtures. I can not afford to have someone come out and asses all the damage( I live in a small off the way town that it cost a fortune to get people out to repair things.) My sister advises me that her insurance will not cover this type of damage.

The plumber said to not use it and only depend on it to use with the dishwasher. Any good advice out there?

My GCFI circut that my deep freezer is plugged into. I didn't have this problem when I moved into my home. Now the circut is tripping off. Do I have to change out the circut braker at the main box, or change the GCFI outlet? There is double 15amp braker in the main box. Can I change to a lager braker such as a double 20amp, if theres such a thing. How can I solve this problem without bringing in an expensive elect guy. But If I have to so be it. Please advise. Thanks
