We had work done on my toilet about a month ago. I can still smell sewer fumes in there, but I've recently quit smoking so my sense of smell is very sensitive. My parents' senses are very dull and I can't convince them of how bad it really smells. They won't call the plumber back because "There's nothing to tell him to do." The fumes get really bad when I turn on the fan. I haven't gotten sick yet, but I've read that it's quite possible. Is there anything I can do myself, like caulk the floor seam? Or should I just insist on calling the plumber back?

Call the plumber back to fix his work. There should be no way for sewer gas to get into your house from a properly installed toilet.

You are likely smelling methane, a gas produced by waste breakdown, and is very flammable! AKA natural gas. Hopefully, the plumber did not try to reuse the old wax seal, which is a big mistake. Perhaps the new wax seal didn't fit up right. Either way, the toilet needs to be pulled and the seal checked because if gas is leaking back, then likely waste water is as well, which will rot the floor under the 'mode in a hurry!

Call the plumber back. I've worked on a lot of toilets and that's not normal. It sound like the wax ring didn't seal right.

Make sure there is not a small leak under the toilet.

There is a wax seal between the toilet and drain.
