I tried fishing it out with a magnet tied to a flexible wire - I caught two bobbie pins but not the twist tie.

Sounds like a job for the shop vac. If that doesn't do it, you could remove the panel from the back of the dryer and remove the lint that is inside there.

If you light one of these things on fire you'll see they don't burn much and are probably more resistant to fire than the lint already in there as well.

But I must admit, it's the kind of thing that would annoy me and make me take the thing apart until I found it (I like to take things apart; I don't need much of an excuse.).

You might find some old socks in there too.

No, but it could catch lint and build up a nice nest of it. That would be a fire hazard. Pull the lint hose off the back and clean out all the debris once in a while. Just a good precaution.

Fishing with a magnet tied to a flexible wire is illegal in many states. The fish and game department could hand you with a huge fine if you don't have a license.

Don't worry about it. Chances are those bobbie pins have been down there for months and they didn't start a fire.

Probably not unless it causes other material to be traped in the vent. I would think that it will be ok.
