I would advise a Corgi registered or solid fuel registered engineer to do this for you, as the chimney needs to be tested and commissioned.

The flue for a gas fire would not be of sufficient diameter to accept a solid fuel fire, to have a new flue installed would be horrendously expensive.

You have to be sure that the opening (you make) is properly supported.

You also have to get the chimney/flue itself checked out to make sure that it will 'draw', and that smoke/fumes will leave the house.

get in an expert.
