I bought a Hampton Bay fanlight last month. Today I discovered that a light bulb had gone out so I tried to replace it. When I tried to turn on the light, the lights all fizzled out. Now only the fan works, but none of the lights do. What could've caused this? Can this be repaired? And, more importantly, can I just replace the light kit, which appears to be absolutely damaged, or do I have to replace the entire fanlight? I'd hate to have to replace the whole thing. Any helpful answers are greatly appreciated.

My friends whirlpool and shower drain real slow and I noticed that the drain pipes (PVC) in the basement don't slope downwards but are fairly level and maybe even have a dip in the middle (not supported by hangers)---could this cause the drains to be slow and what slope is required for this per foot of run. Her drain pipes run about 8 - 10 feet from the shower to whirlpool and then 8-10 feet to the soil stack.
Thanks for any info.

My friend's house is about 60 years old and some of the water pressure in the kitchen, upstairs bath and others is very low---city water. I believe it's from lots of deposits in the cast iron pipes reducing the water flow---I replaced the water heater and the inlet/outlet pipes were a third of their original diameter from deposits. Is there a method or products available to clean out the pipes without replacing them? My thought would be to turn off the water and drain the pipes, cap off any pipes from the heater, remove all the connections at the shutoff valves and then pour Limeaway or CLR into the pipes to dissolve the deposits and then flush them out. Any ideas if this is ok to do or any other non-toxic treatments on the market. I'd like to help her solve this problem without re-piping the whole house but I want a safe solution also.
Thanks for any input and help!!

I live by myself and last month my water/sewage bill was $63.00, which is pretty average. I just got my bill for this month and it's $892.00! I almost fainted. I have city water. According to the bill, my usage went from 2,460 to 43,130. My toilet has been running for a month but I didn't think anything of it. I usually just wiggle the handle and it stops. Can a running toilet cause this much usage of water? It's the only thing I can think of that would cause the bill to be so high except that the company could have made a mistake reading the meter. I have no way to pay this bill. What should I do?

They cut open the belly to release a lot of water throughtout the home and now are repiring it by putting in new insulation and screwing a piece of scrap paneling to the boards. Under the paneling is exposed insulation.

and it will probably be taken out of my security deposit. Obviously, it will be quite a bit of money and my wife and I don't have the funds for this to happen, is there any way that I can fix this problem either by coming up with another excuse to tell the apartment community or and DIY ways to fix the carpet. It's about a foot and a half long maybe an inch thick and is coming from the wall to the middle of the hallway, near the garage door. That's the best description possible. Thanks a lot.

I was thinking about handing sanding it myself.... Like doing a square foot at a time.. even if I spend 6 months on it. One reason... I'm an older woman - my lungs can't take the dust and I can clean as I go.
Can people out there with experience tell me whether this is an absurd idea or if it will work and what will be the pitfalls?
Thanks!

I have a free standing electric range (that sits flush against the wall) that needs to be replaced. Can I just do that myself if I have it delivered? Is it a simple procedure? I can have the old one picked up by the bulk trash people. But I don't want to screw up the installation. I know this may sound stupid, but is it just a matter of plugging the new one in where the old one was? Or is it more complicated than that? Of course I'm replacing the old one with a new one of the same size, components, etc. Thanks for the help!

Cabinets are probably 20 yrs. old and seem to have never been cleaned! I'm using Murphy's Oil soap, but there is still "grime" near the handles. I'm afraid I will remove the finish on the doors and don't want another project! This house is 55 yrs old and has plenty of projects already :)
