best way to regrout my weather damaged chimney?

live in rain forest.bad design[two patio slabs]cap my double chimney.water has run inside and out,wearing motar.installing stainless pipe but need to repair outside motar? or grout?

Cut out the old lose mortar with a chisel or angle grinder with diamond wheel re point with pointing tool and mortar. After mortar cures, a couple weeks, Apply a good masonry sealer to all the brick and mortar

Chase out the old mortar with a cold chisel and re-point it.
