RE:
If the only thing going up my chimney is exhaust from my furnace, do I need to periodically have it cleaned?

The chimney should be checked by your heater service tech when he checks out the heater. Just because it is gas doesn't mean that it cannot fail. Cracks in the terracotta lining are common and can cause pieces to fall down and cause a blockage. animals also can get down the chimney as well. A good service tech will always check the base of the chimney and try to look up it from the bottom when performing heater maintenance. Trust me, I have found some chimney problems during routine checks on customers heaters before. Normally chimney's with gas appliances in them do not need to be cleaned, just checked every few years.

Yes..... to prevent a thing called creosote (which a known carcinogen) from building up ... this can cause MAJOR problems if it goes untreated. Usually once a year, after the winter season or when you use it, get it done.

Just a good 'ole Chimney Sweep company is good to call.

Good luck!

Nah. My house was built in '54, and the furnace/ water heater both share their own little chimney. It's never been cleaned, and everything works fine. Natural gas just burns so cleanly.

YES..You still need to clean it but not as often. Oil and Gas fired furnaces still make "soot" that will build up along with carbon from your furnace. It isn't so much dangerous from a fire as much as it does choke off or prevent air from getting into your furnace draft to burn the fuel more efficiently. I clean mine about every 2 years or so.....Cleaning it periodically will make a difference.......
