I bought a Hampton Bay fanlight last month. Today I discovered that a light bulb had gone out so I tried to replace it. When I tried to turn on the light, the lights all fizzled out. Now only the fan works, but none of the lights do. What could've caused this? Can this be repaired? And, more importantly, can I just replace the light kit, which appears to be absolutely damaged, or do I have to replace the entire fanlight? I'd hate to have to replace the whole thing. Any helpful answers are greatly appreciated.

sounds like the most likely problem is the wires suppling power to the lights in your fan are bad, they ahve either came loose from the wire nut or the switch itself is bad....i would remove the light kit and check to see if that is the problem before i went and got a new light kit for the fan...if the power wire did come loose you will still have a problem even if you replace the light kit...

Fan lights on todays fans are junk. The ones that have the most problems are the cheap fans with multiple lights branching out. Most people get the 4 bulb ones that are the problem. Inside each socket that holds the lamp is a shell that holds the light and makes the neutral connection. In the middle there is a small strip that sticks up to touch the middle of the base of the lamp for the hot. Both are held in place by a tiny rivet. This rivet also connects those parts to the wires on back. They get over heated by putting 60 watt bulbs or larger then start arcing and causing loose connections in the shell.
It could be a bad connection in the wire housing above the light assembly. NEVER use those little wire nuts they give you. The ones that are pure plastic and have no metal inside just strip out and hold nothing. Go get a few from the hardware store they are fairly cheap.
Save yourself some headaches and keep the wattage of the bulbs at 40w or less, or buy a single lamp light kit.
Just from your discription I am leaning towards the wires in the light assembly base not being held together.

You ask, "can I just replace the light kit, which appears to be absolutely damaged". What do you mean by that? How did it get damaged? Was it that way when you put it up?
In first reading your question, my first instinct was that perhaps one of the wires for the light kit may have gotten pinched by one of the screws holding it all together, or the wires themselves have either come apart losing connectivity or together which would cause a short circuit.

The above are all very good answers......I'm assuming you installed the fan yourself???? The only thing I could possibly add is maybe the wirenut to the light (red wire) came loose in the j-box? Maybe it didn't quite get connected correctly? Could also be a defective light kit. If all the connections are done correctly and there isn't ANYTHING you've done wrong, take it back and get a new one before the warranty runs out.

Hampton Bay is a Home Depot product, I think. If you do need to replace the light, they should have them.
First try removing the 3 screws around the bottom of the fan that hold the light kit in place and check to see if the plastic push in connectors (blue and white I think) are in all the way.

these Hamptons have a problem with the light part becoming loose and folks twisting bulbs in and out, breaking the wires.
a few wires just need to be repaired or replaced. you have to disassemble the light part.

the problem could be that whoever installed the fan, left the wiring loose, see if there is loose wiring if not replace the light kit.

pull it down and take it back to home depot with your receipt and ask for another and say it defective, but you would like another of that same brand
if no receipt take your license and do the same, they may give you a store credit w/o receipt

If it's only a month old return it for a new one. It's still under warranty.
