Look up it with a mirror on a sunny day if that's possible. If it looks anyway other than smooth, have it cleaned.

Go on the roof and look down it with a flashlight. If it has "carbon" deposits built up heavy, get it cleaned. This is usually caused by burning unseasoned wood or pine which causes cresote to form and cause chimney fires.

It should be cleaned at the end of each winter. Better be save, have it cleaned now.
