when water comes into contact with an energized electrical circuit an thing called electrolysis occurs. the electricity starts to break down the water into hydrogen and oxygen gasses. if it continues for a long time the gasses can build up to an explosive mixture. as that is happening the wires in the circuit could start heating up as the heat generated by the water breakdown causes sparks. its called a cascade effect. one thing leads to another and either the circuit breakers kick out or a fire starts

First, you're lucky you didn't fry yourself by pouring water on it. Sounds like you had WAY too much plugged in. Make sure whatever you buy next has a built in circuit breaker which will turn off power automatically if too much is being drawn. The power went off because either a fuse was blown or a circuit was tripped at the main electrical box which is exactly what is supposed to happen in this circumstance.

It can. When water shorts out a circuit the amperage flow is temporarily very high. If the wiring insulation is worn or broken anywhere along the circuit the surge will break through and short out against the closest metal object. That creates a lot of heat; anything flammable nearby could well catch fire.

it could cause electricity to arc and that would start a fire - could be in the wall, which allows the fire to then spread & gain strength before you know it is there. Most likely, tho, it would just give you a shock.

no, but if it touches a wire whilst it is plugged in and switched on, your fuse will blow, at least

it is safe to dry it before you use it again .. electricity is dangerous
