I was showering with the bathroom door open. My house was a bit cool. The smoke detector right outside the bathroom door started screaming midway through my shower (It had never gone off before). I didn't smell or see any smoke. Could it have possibly been from STEAM?

I just bought a new house. The Idiots who painted it painted the windows shut. I've been using a utility knife, a flexible paring knife & a hammer. Since I'm not into masochism or blood loss is there an easier way of doing this? I have three floors in this house. Does anybody have any ideas?

Hi,
I am wiring my new addition. My question has to do with the wiring. I have recepticals in opposite corners of the room. Should I drill holes into each stud around the room to run the wire? Or am I better off drilling a hole into the top plate, and running the wire across the attic, drilling a hole into the opposite top plate, and down to the second receptical??

Thanks for your time

In places with a lot of doors, like a dorm for instance, the janitors always have like one key for all the rooms on the floor. How is that possible when my key won't work on my neighbors' room?

I changed my a/c filter on the inside of my home but my thermostat still shows "service filter". Which side of the filter should face toward the unit? I have tried both and still same message. Also, my outside unit runs all the time, even when I turn the thermostat inside to "off". Is this normal? I rent and don't want to call the landlord because someone just came out here a few months ago to work on the outside unit(heats and cools) after lightning hit my home. I'm afraid he'll raise my rent if he has to keep calling someone to fix things. My light/ac bill is $258 month for a trailer, and I am wondering if there is an ac problem. It cools and heats fine.

BT are trying to charge me £135 for what they say was a power surge. Nothing else has been affected in my home. I just couldn't receive calls although I could make them. The engineer said it was a faulty box which he changed. They also said I was advised of charges (Iwasn't) How do I prove I didn't have a power surge?

My stove went out, and im short on cash. Because the lights go on, I have hope that I myself can fix the problem of things not heating up. I am assuming its a fuse somewhere, or a short. There was a dead mouse in the back of the stove when I opened her up, and it was fresh so I assume it shorted something out.

Instead of buying a new stove, or getting repairs that would for sure cost nearly as much as a new stove, I would like to try to do things myself. INside, things look incredibly simple (wiring wise), but I cannot find anything visibly burnt out, and I cannot find any fuse.

Can anyone help me locate where the fuse is, recomend a site to help me fix this ge stove, or give a recomendation on what else the problem may be?

Again, its a 15 year old GE stove (electric).
Any help is greatly appreciated. Much thanks in advance.

We just moved into our new house a month ago ...

There has been a terrible smell upstairs, and I have tracked it down to the drain in the floor of our master bath.

Is it okay to put bleach down to cut the smell? Or is there something else I can do myself with out having to ring a plumber

PLEASE ADVISE!!!! Thanks for any / all advice on this matter

I was wondering why the former owners lit flowery candles during all the open for inspections.... Now I know!

I rent an apartment and just recently I some mushrooms began to spring up in front of our hall closet. There have never been any spills or leaks there that I am aware of. I contacted my landlady and she didnt act like ti was a big concern. The mushrooms died and went away after a couple of days, after we carefully killed and removed them (we didnt want to spread spores).
A few days later a TON more mushrooms sprang up. I'm figuring there's a leak. I know that I couldn't have removed all the spores, so if there's a leak or excess moisture then more mushrooms are to be expected.
I've tried contacting my landlady again. She has not replied. I really feel that this is her department, since it is a precondition, and not due to our tenancy. For the time being, what can I do to get rid of the mushrooms? Is there a possibility of health risks? I have a baby in the house too, and it is very difficult to keep her away from the contaminated area. What can I do?
