I just bought a new house. The Idiots who painted it painted the windows shut. I've been using a utility knife, a flexible paring knife & a hammer. Since I'm not into masochism or blood loss is there an easier way of doing this? I have three floors in this house. Does anybody have any ideas?

Have you checked to see if the sash has been nailed in anyway?

If it hasn't, you'll need to cut away the paint at the edge of the sash. You can use any sharp knife, but a pizza cutter does an especially neat job. Be sure to work gently to avoid breaking the glass, and wear eye protection just in case.

Run the knife all the way around the sash. If that doesn't free it up, force a putty knife as far in as it will go.

If it's still stuck, tap a block of wood against the frame at several points. Don't hit the sash.

As a last resort, use a thin pry bar to push up at the edge of the window, on alternating sides.

Do you live somewhere that the humidity is high? My windows are not painted shut, but they always end up getting stuck by about mid-summer just from heat swelling and moisture. After a few weeks of cool, Fall weather they're ready to open back up. If you live somewhere that this situation could apply, you might give until a little later in the season to see if that helps before you resort to more desperate measures and injure yourself !

I have worked on older houses being an electrician and have seen steps to unstick painted windows. The only way I have seen it done by the pros is a good, sharp utility knife.

I guess you could try some paint stripper gell

the gell sticks better to windows that are not flat on the ground.

The windows were probably very loose fitting and the paint ran down between the window and sash. This will require cutting the paint all the way down to the bottom. As stated, a sharp putty knife is probably the best way to do it.

I have to assume that they are wooden framed windows. get a stiff medium width putty knife, put in on the wood of the windows, and shove it gently into what should be a crack. I don't think you need a hammer, a good heel of the hand will probably work.

As a carpenter I've used a heat gun on a low setting and a little patience.

Remember to do this when the ambient temperature is warm and the the glass is warm too as the heat from the gun could crack the glass if the airflow gets to close.
