Try looking in your local newspaper for a handyman instead of a plumber. They won't have credentials, but hopefully they'll be honest with you about what they're capable of doing. The listing may also say "Rent-A-Husband." No kidding.

I'm saddened by the answers.

Reasonably priced services by contractors are no different than a white collar professional overcharging, or being fair.

It may not be Rocket Science, or take a Doctorate in Physics, but I suspect it isn't something one does successfuly, just by learning from trial and error.

Certainly I've heard all the snide remarks and bad taste jokes about Plumbers, Doctors, Lawyers, and some Indian Chiefs, but I have to say this.

Think about middle of the night...most business are closed,,,suddenly your plumbing develops a leak YOU can't stop. You happen on a plumber who offers rapid emergency service, and actually fixes the problem. What might you expect to pay???

Without knowing your status, occupation, assumed station in life, of budget issues,,,How much might you charge for accomplishing something a client was unable to?

Assume that you may be a home maker, and not employed,,,isn't your time, and/or any effort you expend in the course of a day, worth anything?

Example: A stay at home mom, with 3 kids. She has worth,,perhaps triple per hour over what her mate might bring home? A simple trip to a market, costs more than just the groceries. There is the gas expense, vehicle wear and tear, Time consumed to do the shopping, then unloading and packing away,,,all while attending other needs.

A plumber or any other contractor is merely attending the needs of others, who can't do the task themselves, hence is likely worth any price charged to resolve a problem. BTW I've taken many clients who attempted DIY unsuccessfully.

Think on this too. "You get what you pay for" is a very valid quote. When you find cheap or free, try not to complain about any resulting issues.

Rev. Steven

Beyond all that,,, Find one who is licenesed, bonded, insured, in business for a long time, has satisfied references you can check.

Inexpensive plumbers are inexpensive because they are good plumbers and good business people who operate an efficient, low cost business, with happy customers who send them repeat business and lots of referrals so they don't have to spend money on advertising.

That means: to find an inexpensive plumber who does good work, ask your friends and neighbors and people in your church and the folks at your neighborhood hardware store for referrals.

You'll have to marry one. Plumbers are not inexpensive, even if they are your friend. You have to be related.
