It's unlikely that you can recharge your refrigerator for two reasons. First one is the availabilty of freon. The Air Conditioning lobby successfully convinced Congress to outlaw the sale of freon to anyone except people with a license.
The second reason is that most refrigerators except perhaps large commercial ones are not built with the connections necessary to add freon. The compressor units are filled by machines and actually sealed by machine when charged. After that nothing goes in or out, except when they fail.

How old is the ref.? In 1996 the gas (freon) was changed over on all ref./freezers/cars,etc. from R-12 to R-134-A. This R-134-A gas can be purchased by all at many stores, while the R-12 gas can only be purchased under strict regulations and not by the general public. The R-12 is very costly(if you can still get it)==about $50 for a 12 oz. can==while the R-132-A is about 1/10th that cost approx. Many other things can cause your ref. "to stop working"==you did not include enough details about your ref. to give you a good answer with-out writing a book on it. Also ==you may not even need to recharge the gas at all. Call a service guy or buy another ref. Have a nice day.

I doubt you can buy the R-12 anymore that used to come in the cans you could buy at the auto store. They claimed it was hurting the ozone.
The newer refrigerant has to have a pump that draws the liquid into the system and recover whatever is the old refrigerant.

not a wize idea unless you know what you are doing it may not be a leak of refrigerant , and you need a leak detector to check that it could be two or three other things the matter with it
