I'd like to hang an organizer on the back of my panty door but want it secure and not to rip the door apart. Do I use a butterfly bolt and a washer?

hollow core doors are not very prone to supporting things
i would place a piece of scrap wood over the place you want to drill to help prevent splintering first off
then wrap a piece of tape around the drill bit to mark the depth u can go without puncturing the other side of the door
a butterfly bolt is ok but requires a pretty good sized hole
the thickness of a hollow door is not much and the wood is usually pretty soft
i just see so many problems here
i am thinking of a possible fix here with a piece of board epoxied onto the door
the surface area would be so much greater to support the weight
then you could attach the organizer to it any way you want with little chance of it ever coming off
get a good 5 minute epoxy made for wood and put your drill away

Hollow core doors have a limit as to how much weight they can support. However, usually the edges of the door are the most reinforced part. I suggest locating where the internal frame around the inside of the door is located and confining your screws to the area about 1" inch from the top of the door, or wherever the top wooden support is. Then you could either hang the organizer high on the door or supported by wires attached to the screws.

Drill the smallest hole possible, and use a fastener. Butterflys (Toggle bolts) are good, but I'd use an expanding fastener- plastic or metal. You can find some just designed for hollow core doors.

If at all possible, I'd also use fender washers on the front.

If this is an off the shelf door, it will have a one to two inch RAIL at the top and a one inch stile at the edges. There will be nothing in the middle where you want to hang the organizer.

Spread out the weight by putting it on a piece of plywood screwed to the face. The plywood can be screwed with drywall screws at the corners.
