Garden & Landscape - November 2007

I've cleared a good portion of my backyard that was previously all scrub brush; vines, prickers, small tree shrubs, etc. Really dense small growth stuff. Now, I have small bundles of sappling stumps everywhere from where I pruned them to the ground. Previous experience tells me they are just going to grow back if I don't completely eradicate them. There are far too many to dig out by hand. Any suggestions?

Just recently moved to a new house, it's a heavely wooded area (South East Tx). I get tons of leaves and pine needles in my yard. I was thinking of building a compost bin for the leaves and grass clippings, but I have a few questions. How long does it usually take to have some useable material ? Also, does it create an oder ? Are leaves and grass clippings enough ? Is it better to build your own or buy a bin from a garden center ?

I have 7 acres of wetlands in my yard and would like to cut the little junk trees down to bring in air and sun in the summer. The trees are all about 15-30 feet tall.

My questions are:

1) Can you cut trees down in the winter if its freezing out?\

2) What is the best and safest way to cut down a tree myself?

3) How long do you think it will take the land to dry before planting other plants and trees?

Thank you

My apple trees make nice big apples, but they go spotty black before they reach maturity... I'm wondering if this has something to do with the leaves not coming off? [As it is chilly here in Ontario.]

1. Grows fast
2. Grows tall (100' or more)
3. Can survive the winters here.

Please help and thanks

It was 4 feet 69 (the cucumber, not the hog), and was like a child for us. We pinned all our hopes in its wining.

My grandfather lives right on the lake and all summer I was noticing this weird growth on the base of a large branch (what is left of one that must have come down in a storm at some point). It is a very pale yellow color, and almost seemed to look "dirty" as the weather dropped, but the last time I was up there, the "fungus" (if that's what it is) was still there. It's large, and doesn't resemble anything I've found on the internet. It just looks like someone sprayed a pale yellow foam/whipped cream for about 2 and half feet (in length) and most of the way around the entire circle of the branch.

Any ideas?

Hi, everyone. I was given a gift, an amarillys plant a few days ago. I've been really paranoid because I cannot have it die on me, because the person who gave me it will get upset (I think). Today, my little brother tilted it and the stem kind of broke but not totally. Do you think it will still live? I have it propped up but I'm not really a floral person. Thank you so much for your feedback!

I would like to have a nice pot near my front door but the problem is that it doesn't get a lot of sun, if any at all. I could move the pot to be in the sun but it would get the afternoon sun but not for very long.

Can anybody help me with some Australian native plants for the Sydney area that will tolerate this?

I have heard that Correas like shade but have also read that they prefer full sun, so I'm confused.

I would like something flowering.

Thanks for your input.

Not sure if infact the two are actually modified cultivers. Being maybe the Lace Lady is actually a modified Tortuosa? Looking for a nice quick growing lush tree, but would prefer something safe for kids to be around.

This plant / weed has a red/pink type penis shaft and grows to about 8 cm. Just underneath the surface there is a white mushroom type seed which the plant/weed grows from. The plant/weed only seems to live for 3-10 days then dies and stinks. It seems to attrack the flies. I remove these plants but more seem to turn up.

I live in New England, and it came with very brief instructions, and I've looked online and got conflicting instructions. Some say it needs to be kept outside all winter, some say to bring it in. I forgot it on my deck and it was cold out and all the leaves fell off, so I hope I didn't kill it already!!! Oh, It is a outdoor grape bonsai if that helps. Any advice would be appreciated!
