I really love nature, and being surrounded by it, helping out with the birds to the ants. Now its winter though, and I feel so like restless. Is there anything I could do to help out animals? I started reading nature books, and everything is for spring and summer! I live in zone 6-7 in Long Island. Some info on my yard: I have a small pond, 100-250 gallons, Most of my yard is brick, I have a vegatable garden, my backyard is like this: Pond with rocks around it, pebbles, brick patio, and a little garden, about 10'x 30'. Any suggestions on helping the birdies, or frogs, or bugs, or hedge hogs, or any other wildlife near me at this time of year?

I have a plant i recently bought from IKEA.... I know, clitch. Anyways, this is my second experiance with an IKEa plant, the first being an Aloe that died..... I need to identify what sort of plant i just bought because it didn't come with identification and IKEA doesn't list it's plants. It's a green plant that seeems to grow in a cluster like grass. It has a pointed leaves that go up the plant in pairs like a ladder though the leaves themselves are separate from each other. The pointed leaves remind me of maple leaves. Please help, this is my only real chance left to see if i actually have a black thumb or not and I can't do that if I don't know how to grow the plant...

I was trying to grow peppers earlier this year and they kept geting covered in some strange white powder. Then when the peppers got big and before I picked the peppers I found huge caterpillers. Atleast 10. I found out they were Death Head Hawk Moths except they were still caterpillers. Anyway I need to know how to stop them next time. I really dont want to deal with them everytime I try to grow peppers. (I live in Florida if that helps at all)

we have 5 huge pecan trees in our backyard and i am looking for one of those things that roll on the ground and pick up your pecans. i think they are probably made of some sort of metal and they have a long handle for you to push it and the bottom part rolls and somehow picks up pecans. thanks for any help

I got a new growth off of a needle palm and I slightly moistened the part that goes in the dirt and I root toned it. The root tone powder was stuck on it really well and I put it in dirt in a pot. Its been a week and the cuttings look fine. I just dont know how often I should water it. How often do I water it? That is what im wanting to know.

Half the people I talk to say I should wait til spring, the rest say that it's almost better to plant now so the seed can take in the moisture from the snow that we will get this winter and get a good start.

I'm sure different kinds of grass are more hardy than others. And certainly a Great Dane is going to have a bigger bladder to relieve than a little kitty.

But my question is really about my neighbors who know we have fines for pet debris that is not picked up by the owner. But when it comes to urine, they seem to have a much looser attitude and it just ticks me off when they let their pets be drawn to one spot on my lawn that has become their favorite.latrine, and I'd like to make the argument "You are killing my grass"...but I'm not sure how correct this would be, horticulturally speaking.

I remember the neighbors around Wrigley Field in Chicago were up in arms about intoxicated baseball fans relieving themselves on their bushes and flowers, using the argument they were killing their plants. And they got some pretty strict fines for that put in place. How much truth to is there to the argument that urine kills grass? Is pet urine worse than human urine? When is it "too much"
